carità, dell’accoglienza, dell’aiuto al fedele esitante e all’uomo in ricerca.
Domenico Brandolino, ssp
2nd SUNDAY OF EASTER (DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY)
A NOVELIST I admire was interviewed shortly before her death. She had been ill for some time, and spoke plainly about what she
expected to happen when she died. She said something like this: “I believe that death is the end. We live, we die, and that’s all.”
I felt saddened by her words. I wanted to think of ways to convince her otherwise, to give her and everyone who shares that view
some proof that they will rise again in the fullness of life with God forever.
Nearly 2,000 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are far removed in time from the disciples, who saw with their own
eyes, and from “doubting” Thomas, who could even touch the wounds in Christ’s hands and side. But we can still rely on these
disciples’ testimony, which has been handed down from one person to another over the centuries – authentic and trustworthy.
When our faith seems shaky, we need only look to those who went before us and those around us whose faith is unwavering. They
can support us and bolster us. As our faith grows stronger, we become anchors for others who may be drifting. The scriptures, too,
are a great source of hope and faith for us today, for we are not the first to doubt, to question. Signs and wonders are all around us,
if we have eyes to see and ears to hear! Anne Louise Mahoney, Ottawa, ON

Reflections for the Year of Mercy – April 3, 2016
Second Sunday of Easter/ Divine Mercy Sunday
Last year on this Sunday, Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of Mercy. Saint John Paul II
named the Second Sunday of Easter “Sunday of Divine Mercy” in response to Saint Faustina
Kowalska’s Divine Mercy devotion, which offered spiritual comfort to hearts worldwide. But Francis
challenges us to make that comfort we receive a gift we gladly share: “We are called to show mercy
because mercy has first been shown to us.” The clearest expression of merciful love, says Francis, is
pardoning others. “At times how hard it seems to forgive!” he acknowledges. “And yet pardon is the
instrument placed into our fragile hands to attain serenity of heart” (Misericordiae Vultus, 9). The
necessary condition for living joyfully? “To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge.” May Divine
Mercy Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy remind us that Jesus made mercy our life’s ideal and a
criterion for our faith’s credibility: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew
5:7).

THE ARCHBISHOP OF EDMONTON

Most Rev. Richard W. Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton, is inviting parishioners to participate
in the upcoming series of “conversations with the Archbishop” about assisted suicide

dates and times of the 5 sessions follow.

In his letter to all parishioners, Archbishop Smith wrote that “we need to share the beauty of
Catholic teaching on life and death, hear inspiring stories from personal witnesses, and
answer some of the questions with which we know our people are struggling. In Holy Week,
we reflect in a special way on the suffering and death of Our Lord, and remember that he is
always close to us in our own pain.”

SMG Community Centre News
It was great seeing so many friends and family
enjoying a few hours together at last week's Easter
Buffet sharing food and smiles. Thank you for the
many positive comments we've received. We are
listening and all comments are most welcome. We
continue to strive to improve our service for our
customers and our Parishioners!
With April rounding the corner, gardening is on the
minds of many of us. It's never too early to start thinking
about it, anyway. It is early to plant, of course. But the
temperature seems to be calling all of us who love
backyard gardening. Edmonton is considered zone 2, so
frost free days aren't usually safe until May. But I'll bet
many Parishioners have their seedlings ready by the
window! By later this month, however, it is safe to plant
such seeds as spinach, peas, carrots, onions, and Swiss
chard. Gardening brings us closer to our God-given
natural world. We must take care of the fragile seedlings
for them to grow strong. Just as we must take care of our
physical health and spiritual health to remain strong.
With the wonderful warm weather commencing, it is a
good time to renew both our physical and spiritual
resolve. Attending Mass is a great start for such
renewal!
The Knights always welcome our Parish brothers to learn
more about us. We do charitable works and we support
our Parish and our Pastor. Call Tony if you have any
inquiry: 780-297-4479. Have a safe and wonderful
week everyone!
