L’ATTENZIONE AL POVERO VERIFICA LA NOSTRA FEDE
XXVII DOMENICA DEL TEMPO ORDINARIO
GLI APOSTOLI AL SIGNORE GESÙ: “ACCRESCI LA NOSTRA FEDE!”
DI fronte alle ricorrenti situazioni di ingiustizia, il profeta Abacuc accoglie e annuncia che Dio si fa garante della salvezza per
quanti, nel popolo, nonostante tutto, perseverano nella fiducia in lui (I Lettura). “Il giusto vivrà per la sua fede”.
È un impegno non facile, che richiede di ravvivare in ogni momento il dono di Dio che ci è stato elargito anzitutto nel Battesimo e
poi in tutti i Sacramenti della fede. Questo ci permette di non vivere nella timidezza, ma, nella forza dello Spirito Santo, con amore
e saggezza (II Lettura).
La fede, tuttavia, non è un qualcosa che l’uomo può darsi da sé, né può misurarla in termini di quantità: la fede è un dono che
dobbiamo invocare costantemente perché sia presente nella nostra vita come luce interiore che illumina le scelte e riferimento
costante per la direzione che vogliamo dare all’esistenza. Allora come i discepoli, chiediamo al Signore: “Aumenta la nostra fede”,
nella consapevolezza che essa sola è fonte di salvezza (Vangelo). Tiberio Cantaboni
27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
TODAY IS FILLED with voices challenging God. The verse from Habakkuk, for example, opens with “O Lord, how long
shall I cry for help, and you will not listen?” Habakkuk wants to know why bad things happen to good people. And in
the gospel, the apostles – even though they have witnessed Jesus actively at work – demand, “Increase our faith!”
The apostles ask for their faith to be increased because they want proof that Jesus is who he says he is – they want to
see a miracle. It’s telling that Jesus doesn’t reply “Okay” and light the nearest bush on fire; nor does he say, “Get
lost.” Instead, he informs them, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ’Be
uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.”
Faith, like love, isn’t something that you do every day. As the reading from Timothy reminds us, the gift of God is
within us; with self-discipline and love we can see our belief grow as we engage in the work God asks of us. A miracle
doesn’t have to be inexplicable. Sometimes a miracle is as small as a homeless person getting a free meal, or an
unexpected compliment to brighten someone's day. Miracles can occur when we choose to do more than simply what

Twenty-seventh Sunday in
Ordinary Time
“How long, O LORD?” (Habakkuk
1:2). With Habakkuk’s question
echoing across twenty-six hundred
years, Respect Life Sunday finds
all life claiming sanctuary in our
hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee,
imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and
disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth,
Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si’, bears scars of disrespect
for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened,
as in Habakkuk’s day, with ruin and misery, “destruction
and violence, . . . strife and clamorous discord” (see 1:3).
Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we
“unprofitable servants” cry with the apostles, “Increase our
faith” (Luke 17:10, 5). But Jesus’ reply might be
paraphrased, “Not quantity—quality.” Next weekend marks
the Jubilee Year of Mercy’s special devotion to Mary,
whose willingness to shelter Jesus in her womb and stand at
the foot of his cross bears witness to the qualities that Jesus
expects our faith to manifest: the willingness to trust, to
risk, and to dare to speak up for life. — Peter Scagnelli,

Journeying through the RCIA
at Santa Maria Goretti Parish
The Santa Maria Goretti Parish invites those who
would like to journey into learning and
understanding more the Catholic faith and to
deepen their relationship with God, to join the
RCIA program of the Parish which starts this
Fall. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults) is the entry point for many into the
Catholic faith community and into a deeper
relationship with God in Jesus Christ.
There will be an initial gathering of RCIA
registrants on October 26 at the Rectory at
6:00 p.m. to meet with the Pastor, Fr.
George, and with Sandra Talarico, Parish
RCIA Coordinator.

2017 CATECHISM CLASSES
Registration Open
Registration is now open for our Preschool, First
Communion
and
Confirmation preparation classes for 2017.
Classes will start on January 15, 2017.
We have a very good reputation for preparing our
children for these precious sacraments, and we
encourage all parents with children wishing to
receive their First Holy Communion and
Confirmation to register. The parish is also
offering pre-school catechism classes for children
between the ages of 4-6 years.
Please register your children by calling the parish
office at (780) 422-8304. Registration forms
may be picked up at the Parish Office. They may
also be downloaded from the Parish website,
www.smgoretti.org.
Parents and candidates are also requested
to meet with Fr. George at the parish
office. Fr. George would like to meet with
all of you in the evenings.
