3rd SUNDAY OF EASTER
NOTHING GOOD ever seems to happen at night in the Gospel of John, and today’s reading is no exception. On
this Third Sunday of Easter, fish can only be caught – and truth can only emerge – at daybreak or, in this case,
when Jesus shows up on the shore and starts a charcoal fire to cook the fish.
After slinking back to their old workplace, stripping off and heaving the boat into the water, the apostles were
astounded when Jesus showed up for breakfast. I wonder what Peter thought when he saw Jesus on the shore –
in his surprise he put his clothes back on before he jumped into the water!
Read this story carefully: Peter and Jesus seem to have some time alone before the others join them. I wonder
what they spoke of. How did Peter feel, facing Jesus again after having denied him a few nights previous? During
this third visit, Jesus asks Peter three times “Do you love me?” and Peter answers three times. Is the number
three used just to even out the score from Peter’s denial at that other charcoal fire, under the cover of darkness?
Or perhaps, during that Easter season and this one, Jesus means to call Peter and all of us into a Trinitarian
perfection of that love. Maureen Wicken, Vancouver, BC

REFLECTIONS for the Year of Mercy –
April 10, 2016 Third Sunday of Easter
How appropriate today’s Gospel for this Jubilee
Year of Mercy, both because of the “breakfast”
Jesus provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it and
bread”) and the number of fish in Peter’s net (“one
hundred fifty-three”) (John 21:11–12). Of the fish,
Saint Augustine suggests that the roasted fish is the
suffering Christ. Saint Gregory the Great adds that
Christ lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our
humanity; to be caught in the “net” of our death; to
be “roasted” in his Passion on the fire of suffering.
Saint Jerome claims that “one hundred fifty-three”
represents the full number of known species of fish,
signifying that the Church’s “net” has room for all
our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-indiversity in the hands of Peter and his successors.
Having received God’s mercy as “the beating heart
of the Gospel,” may the Church—we—“pattern [our]
behavior after the Son of God who went out to
everyone without exception” (Misericordiae Vultus,
12).

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Santa Maria Goretti Chapter
The Knights have always been a group dedicated to the wellbeing and support of Catholic family life. The family is the first
and primary place where we experience and are formed in
our Catholic faith. We promote family as the basis of our faith
where we can grow as a community. We also give support to
our Parish through charity and social needs, and in duty to our
Parish activities. Thank you to all the other Parishioners who
give so generously of their time to contribute to our
wonderful Parish community, either by joining church groups
or by simply volunteering. It is through your efforts that our
church has remained strong all these years! If you have any
questions about our little Knights group, please call Tony at
780-297-4479.

FROM THE OFFICE OF
THE ARCHBISHOP OF EDMONTON
EVERY LIFE MATTERS
OGNI VITA È IMPORTANTE
Most Rev. Richard W. Smith, Archbishop of
Edmonton, is inviting parishioners to
participate in the ongoing series of
“conversations with the Archbishop”
about assisted suicide and euthanasia, that
the Archdiocese is hosting. The series of 5
sessions is called Every Life Matters,
conducted over a 10-day period in different
parishes in the archdiocese. The first and
second sessions were held at St. Anthony
Parish in Lloydminster (April 3) and at
Corpus Christi Parish in Edmonton (April
5). The dates and times of the remaining 3
sessions are as follows:
Session 3 - It’s my body, my choice. The
meaning of freedom in the Christian
tradition.
Terza sessione - È il mio corpo, la mia
scelta.
(St. Mary Parish, Red Deer, domenica, il 10
aprile – 2.30 pm - 4.30 pm)
Session 4 - I don’t want to suffer. The
Christian Understanding of Suffering.
Quarta sessione - Non voglio soffrire.
La comprensione cristiana della sofferenza.
(Holy Trinity Parish, Spruce Grove, martedì,
il 12 aprile – 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm)
Session 5 - What must we do? How are we
called to respond to this new situation?
Quinta sessione - Che cosa dobbiamo fare?
Come dobbiamo rispondere a questa nuova
situazione ?
(St. Charles Parish, Edmonton, giovedì, il 13
aprile – 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm)
In his letter to all parishioners, Archbishop
Smith wrote that “we need to share the
beauty of Catholic teaching on life and
death, hear inspiring stories from personal
witnesses, and answer some of the
questions with which we know our people
are struggling. In Holy Week, we reflect in
a special way on the suffering and death of
Our Lord, and remember that he is always
close to us in our own pain.”
