MOM Report (Pavel Snopok, Andy Nichols) 2010/11/18 VC Actions/Milestones • Andy Nichols is compiling a list of milestones/activities • Please help him populate the list with actions/deadlines • New MICE schedule is being prepared 2 Targetry • Refurbishment of T2 complete • Soak test and inspection regimen: – Started 10Nov10; • New DAQ and controls start of soak test • Excellent resolution on hold position, BCD, etc. • Trend in BCD and acceleration observed 12Nov10 so: – Stopped activation to prepare for first inspection 16Nov10 • Magnetic re-design initated; – Concept for new coil-winding design agreed (08Nov10) • Specification agreed – Magnetic axis tolerance 25 microns to match mechanical tolerance – Permanent magnet dimensions under review • Visit to vendor next step; • Then review substrate, material, and possible vendors 3 Cryosystem • Quench detector is back to RAL • Buffer tank leak has not been fixed, epoxy does not work, need alternative solution (or wait until helium is used up) • LH2 system pressure-tested and certified 4 MICE Hall • North mezzanine rack extension underway. • Need rack extension along East wall for diffuser control, tracker readout, etc. • New shape RFCC raises real estate concerns. • Substation upgrade is being planned (March = no power to MICE for three weeks), please let us know what equipment needs to be independently powered. • DSA/ISIS: with the start of the March 2011 ISIS user run, the DSA effectively becomes part of the ISIS synchrotron and interventions will only be possible at scheduled shutdowns. Please let us know if your equipment can be maintained remotely while running and if not, what work is required to make it so. • Air: MICE hall instrument-air supply was turned off at some point in the past, small air compressor was put into use and failed eventually, now instrument-air supply is restored. 5 PPS • All hardware installed, ready for certification. • John Alexander is to visit RAL on November 22 to start commissioning. • Should take approximately three weeks. • After that ISIS knows that PPS is up and running. 6 Online • miceonrec01/02 got new dual head video cards. • Dual head monitors set up = more screen real estate. • KVM switch to handle dual monitors has been installed (kudos to Henry), should get a separate shelf in the rack for safety reasons. • EPICS: Pierrick devised a scheme to get fast access to monitoring (with a fixed IP). Ask him if you need to know how. • Polarity monitors installed 7 Diffuser • New materials ordered (tungsten, brass). • Parts to be send to Oxford in ~3 weeks. • Magnetic parts are being replaced with nonmagnetic. • Redesign is underway for parts showing too much friction. 8 Spectrometer Solenoid • First round of SS review held on Oct 27 (http://indico.cern.ch/categoryDisplay.py?categId=1229 ). • Reviewers gathered to formulate response to the SS team. • Feedback should be prepared by Dec 1. • RFCC review: Dec 9. 9 AFC • Coil winding about to start, deadline March 2011. • Instrumentation list issue: more temperature sensors might be required (both in cold mass and HTS/LTS). • Last Thursday – meeting with Tesla: – thermal analysis around the turret, – power suppy + quench detector specification. 10 Detectors • TOFs: need re-survey + laser calibration is under discussion. • Tracker: readout – Oct, data – Nov, system safe – Dec. • EMR: delivery scheduled for mid-2011, detector grows in size/weight. • KL: Ludovico Tortora visits RAL to discuss modifications to KL trolley. • CKOV: Lucien Cremaldi and David Sanders visited RAL in October for wellness tests, some results are on elog: https://micewww.pp.rl.ac.uk/elog/MICE+Log/1530. 11
