Transcript MICE -Status & Progress
MICE Project Report
Paul Drumm ~ Sunday August 1 st 2004
Progress since CERN CM8
• Absorber Tests @ FNAL – MuCool • RF-Cavity & Coupling Coil – MuCool • RF Power Source Design • Safety Review - Responses • Cryo cooler implementation – Sign off on this?
• Work in MICE hall – Completed plan • WBS – Schedule & Costs – Involves few people – but needs review…
Technical ISSUES for Now
• Cryo coolers – Appropriate for MICE?
– Appropriate for a NF – Consequence to use of Liquid Helium • Shielding Downstream of MICE – Larger gap; reduced forces; bigger detectors – Can we sign off on this?
• Shielding of MICE tracker – Positive moves – benefits to optics, coupling & forces (although forces are larger)
Technical ISSUES for Next CM
• Layout in hall – Alignment & Fixation – compatible with… • Force Distribution & Control • Staging of MICE • Opened up the understanding of the optics – Does MICE do what we want? • proposal; • MICE notes 49, 83…
ISIS Schedule
• Significant issue since March has been a change in the ISIS shutdown schedule • ISIS normal “long” shutdown is a few weeks • 6 month shutdown in ’04 current – 300 m Amp upgrade – Installation of ISIS RFQ • Next long shutdown moved into ’06 – Beam line to TSII • Mid 2005 -
2004 Shutdown
Engineering Schedule Funding Driven Factors not yet Known/applied
Cost Estimates
• From WBS in round numbers £2.3M
£3.2
£5.0
£6.5
£7.3
£9.6
£11… “with additional costs ~£24M ”
NOTES
• WBS – At some point will need to be reviewed – At that time, we will need to look at the provenance of the information & the assumptions behind the contingency • TRD – Available on web since CM8 – Not polished to the point of publication but is as complete as can be; useful reference; – Review/Revise for October CM10 • GW2 in mind - INFN… - NSF&DOE
And Finally
• Cryo coolers • Shielding Downstream of MICE • Shielding of MICE tracker • MICE Beam Optics • Force Distribution
