1. MICE Hall status
Highlights
Areas of concern
2. Visitors coming to RAL to work on MICE
3. Other issues
2
Decay solenoid
Layout of MICE hall
Linde refrigerator
Downstream beamline
3
DSA (Decay Solenoid Area)
Large section of North wall now
removed to allow:•Survey and set-up of D2
•Installation of girder boxes on
Q35 baseplate
•Test of extension rail frame over
D2 support
•Installation of Decay Solenoid
(after test), trolley and stand.
•Connection of transfer line to
Decay Solenoid.
4
DSA (Decay Solenoid Area)
Roof design
underway – plan to
have removable mesh
panels which can
support borated
polythene (if needed).
Idea to leave area
around decay
solenoid turret open
(confined space regs.)
and provide escape
route without
allowing
unauthorised access.
Lots of work on
cable, water, services.
5
Delay Solenoid
6
Major work in repairing
MLI (Matt Hills and
Liverpool). Cold mass
roughly aligned.
Solenoid moved to
trolley, on rails. Rail
system sits on
temporary false floor.
Linde cryogenics
Problems with compressor /
refrigerator (see talk from Mike
Courthold). We can still go ahead
with test of decay solenoid. We
would like to run a 50m network
cable.
Nick Moore (who is installing the
Network for the MICE Hall, will need
the two switches which JeanSebastian has promised to provide.
Are they already at RAL or do they
need to be shipped?

Q35 Refurbishment & Installation
•First 4 magnets essentially finished. Tests in R6 going well (2?
complete plus a “known good spare” identified).
•All girder box supports complete and assembled. One mounted
on upstream baseplate, 2 on downstream plate. Both baseplates
aligned, levelled, grouted and re-painted.
8
MICE Local Control Room (MLCR)
•All rack bases installed
•First 7 racks installed (including
Network and PPS racks.
•Of the remaining 4 rack positions,
we will only ask DL to supply 2 at
the moment. (Target rack plus an
‘overflow’ target rack that will
probably have some space
available).
•Cable trays installed from MICE
Hall, through the wall and along the
floor of the MLCR.
•Hope to have network available
within ‘days’. Will probably be just a
single cable into the MICE Hall
initially (for Decay Solenoid tests).
•Hopefully we will trial a wireless
network (no guarantees that it will
work).

Visitors coming to RAL to work on MICE
- Visitors/contractors should complete a "RAL Pass Application - Non STFC
Personnel" form. These forms can be obtained from the ISIS Users office. (or ask
Richard or Andy to e-mail you a .pdf – it seems you can’t download it from the
STFC site!)
- The form should then be signed by a RAL member of staff (Richard
Apsimon/Andy Nichols). An "end date" for when the pass will expire must be
entered on the form.
- Once signed, the form should then be taken back to the ISIS User's office where
it will be entered onto the Staff Database.
- The following day, once the Staff database updates, the Pass Office will have all
the relevant information with which to issue a Pass. Visitors/Contractors should
then go to the Pass Office to obtain their pass.
Also, please note:
1. They have to register at the USER Office on their first day.
2. Include on the pass form if you needed to have
i) a computer access and
ii) RAL Outlook access.
3. They will be scheduled to attend a 1 1/2 hour Health and Safety Training
Course.

Other issues
•Everything we are doing is focused on the Xmas shutdown
schedule and the target of 20th Jan.
•To meet this, delays are creeping in to other work which is not crucial
for January but which is very important to the success of MICE. e.g.
–
Magnetic shield wall design and installation.
• South wall designed and structural calculations complete.
• Magnetic steel specification complete and designs done (South wall).
• North wall drawn and designs with Opus for structural design. (DSA roof may
need to take precedence)
–
–
–
False floor and plinth design
Correction of the vacuum box in D1
Vent pipes and excavation work for Hydrogen system
•Linde have been severely hampered by the lack of network
connectivity.
•The termination of the network in the MLCR and 'at the other end'
can/will start today. To do this, they need temporary mains power into
the MLCR. This should not be a problem.
•For the solenoid cool down, perhaps we can run a 50m network
cable?
•Wireless in the Hall may be noisy?
•Finances are too tight. We probably can’t afford anything else!
