Nino تعني باإلسبانية الولد أو ابن المسيح ،وقد أطلق الصيادون في اإلكوادور وبيرو على تلك الظاهرة هذا االسم؛ألنها كانت تأتي قرب أعياد الميالد، وكانت تجعل المحيط الهادي أكثر دفئا ،وتغير اتجاه التيار بالمحيط؛ فتقل األسماك بشكل ملحوظ؛ وهو ما يساعد الصيادين على قضاء هذه الفترة في البيوت مع أسرهم ،لكن االسم لم يعد ُيستخدم للتعبير عن هذه التغيرات الموسمية الطفيفة فقط ،ولكن تجاوزها للتعبير عن التغير المتواصل في جو المحيط الهادي، النينو ..ال يردعها إال نفسها والنينو ال يوقف جماحها شيء إال نفسها؛ حيث تنتهي دورتها ،ويرجع كل شيء لما كان عليه، النينو ..تاريخ مليء بالكوارث وكانت أقوى نينو في القرن الماضي بل على مدار التاريخ تلك التي كانت في 1983-82فقد تسببت في حدوث كوارث على معظم القارات .وكان منها الجفاف والحرائق التي عانت منه كل من أستراليا وأفريقيا وإندونيسيا. واألمطار الغزيرة في بيرو التي لم ُيشهد مثلها من قبل في المنطقة .وقد قُدرت الخسائر بحوالي 13مليون دوالر ،وقُتل حوالي من 1300إلى 2000شخص. كما انتشرت بعض األمراض مثل االلتهاب الدماغي وبينما كان إل نينيو هو المسؤول األول عن موجات الحر القاتل التي شهدها العالم في صيف 1998م ،فإن خبراء المناخ يقولون إن دورة ال نينيا هي المسؤول األساس عن البرودة الشديدة التي اجتاحت العالم في الشتاء الماضي ،والتي من المتوقع أن تستمر خالل هذا الشتاء أيضا .
