Reasons why there was an arms race was
because Germany wanted to build a navy
to rival the British navy. The Kaiser was a
military man and pushed Germany to build
up its arms, he was worried about the
threat of war which was building up at this
time throughout Europe.
In Source C, The Kaiser says that Germany
has a ‘growing empire which needs to be
protected’. Germany had started to build
up its colonies overseas, mainly in Africa,
and was developing its trade. The Kaiser
and the admirals in his navy, believed that
the German navy needed to be stronger to
protect these colonies and trade interests.
