Buriram is the city full of joy
as the name suggests. It is a
city worth living in and a city
worth visiting for those who are
not locals. Buriram province has
several sanctuaries of various
sizes which signify the
prosperity since the ancient
Khmer time.

interesting tourist attractions in
terms of history, culture and
nature. These include
Phanomrung Sanctuary, Muang
Tam Sanctuary, Ku Pagoda,
Nong Hong Sanctuary, Huay
Jorakay Mak, Lam Nang Rong
Dam, La Lerng Roi Roo, and
Angkarn Mountain.

According to the study by
archeologists, evidence of human
settlement since the Pre-historic
and Dvaravati Periods has been
found. In particular, the evidence
of Ancient Khmer Culture
including more than 60
sanctuaries has also been found.
Furthermore, significant
archeological sites of around 10th
-13th century have been found in
various places.

After the era of ancient
Khmer culture, the historical
evidence of Buriram began
again in the late Ayutthaya
period. Then in Thon Buri until
Ratanakosin, Buriram had been
having the status of a city until
1933, the new organization of
regional
governance
made
Buriram into a province and has
remained since then.

beautiful architecture of
phanomrung sanctuary, not
everyone knows that there is
astonishing calculations with
regards to date and time. In
different seasons, when the Sun
rises, it will shine through all 15
door frames in surprising
alignment.

Phanomrung National Park or
Phanomrung Sanctuary is situated
on the crater of the volcano.
Phanomrung Sanctuary is a place
of worship of Hindu Sects and it
has been restored continuously
since the 10th to 12th century.
Phanomrung Sanctuary was built
from pink sandstone. It is situated
on the top of Phanomrung
Mountain. The word Phanomrung
actually means a big mountain.

scholars have read and translated, it
can be summarized that King Rajen
avarman II has a significant role in
building of a sanctuary for Shiva on
Phanomrung Mountain in 10th to 11th
century. At first, it probably was not very
big. Later, King Jayavarman V
dedicated his land and his people for
the Phanomrung Sanctuary. In 12th
century, Narentharatit, lord of the
Mahitarabura royal family the ruler of
this region (the first generation of King
Suryavrman II, the one who instructed to
build Angkor Wat) constructed this
sanctuary and practice religious routine
at Phanomrung Sanctuary.

Kradong Volcano Forest Park is a
place for relaxation and is where the
ancient volcano was. The crater can still
be seen today.
Kradong Volcano Forest Park or
the former Khao Kradong Forest Park
has vast plateau for most of its area.
There are hills with deciduous
dipterocarp forests. There are two hills
next to each other. Kradong Mountain
used to be a volcano. Nowadays, there
is a lake in the crater and the trace of
volcano is very much complete and is
the youngest in Thailand.

The crater looks like half moon.
There is Yonee Peesad Tree which
is a unique plant found only in
Thailand as well as the old volcanic
soil. In the same area, one can pay
respect to Pha Supattra Bopit, a
huge Buddha Image on Kradong
Mountain. The Buddha Image is
made of brick and cement. The
Image faces the north. Do not forget
to pay respect to Buddha’s footprint
model for the prosperity.

Phanomrung Sanctuayr is a
beautiful enormous historical site. It
is also a very important sanctuary
of Buriram. Therefore, there is the
tradition of hiking Phanomrung
Mountain in Buriram. In the festival,
there are the ancient Khmer Royal
Parade and the simulation of
volcanic eruption.
