Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are,
How many are your works, O Lord!
The earth is full of your riches.
You take back your spirit, they die,
returning to the dust from which they came.
You send forth your spirit, they are created;
and you renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord last for ever!
May the Lord rejoice in his works!
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
I find my joy in the Lord.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia, alleluia!
Come, Holy Spirit; fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Alleluia!

THE FIRST FRUITS
To really appreciate the meaning of Pentecost we
need to look back at its Jewish origins. In its
origins, it was a harvest festival to celebrate the
first fruits of summer in the northern hemisphere.
Following the resurrection of
Jesus, the early Christian
community, who were at first
all Jews, experienced the
power of the Risen Jesus still
present in their midst,
restoring their faith in him and
giving them the courage to
proclaim Jesus as God’s chosen
one. Paul called this experience
of God, the God who is Spirit,
the ‘first fruits’ – ‘we ourselves, who have the first
fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait
for adoption, the redemption of our
bodies.’ (Rom 8:23) The Spirit is the first fruit, the
first sign of a harvest that is already ripening. A
process has already started. We had an apricot
tree at my family home. When that first fruit
appeared, I knew for certain that summer had
begun.
Luke gives us the time frame that the Spirit came
to the disciples fifty days after Easter (pente = fifty)
and some scholars see in Luke’s theology that the
Spirit is the first fruit of the Risen Jesus. Certainly,
with the gift of the Spirit there is a flourishing of
the Gospel message within the first community.

PENTECOST INTERCHURCH SERVICE
To begin the Week of Prayer
for Christian Unity, the
Combined Churches of
Brunswick will gather this
evening for an Ecumenical
worship service at the
Salvation Army Hall, 256
Albert Street, Brunswick, at 5.00pm. THEME:
Called to proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord.
All are welcome! Light refreshments will follow
the Service.
ARCHBISHOP HART’S PENTECOST LETTER
The Archbishop’s Pentecost letter to youth is on
the church table for those who would like to take
a copy. This year the theme is ‘Be merciful, as
your heavenly Father is merciful.’
SPECIAL COLLECTION TODAY
Today is Chaplaincy Sunday in the
Archdiocese of Melbourne. The
Melbourne Catholic Archbishop’s
Charitable Fund is conducting a
special collection in all parishes for the purpose of
supporting the vital work of our Catholic
Chaplains in hospitals, prisons, youth justice
facilities and for seafarers. THEME: Chaplains –
Our Companions of Hope. A Catholic Chaplain
says: “In our encounters with people in distress, we
walk into some dark places and help bring in light.”
THE WISDOM OF OUR PARISH SCHOLARS
NEXT WEEK – Wednesday 25 May, 7.30 –
9.00pm. Take the opportunity to listen to the
wisdom of three of our parishioners who are
working on their doctorates in the areas of
Church or Spirituality:
Bryan Cussen is researching Pope
Paul III and Church Reform in the
Sixteenth Century.
Pope Paul III
Christopher Morris is researching
Fr Bruno Barnhart and ‘Wisdom’
Christianity. Fr Bruno was a
Camaldolese monk in the US who
died last year.
Sr Marjetka Zlahtic is researching the New
Evangelisation – how to announce Christ in our
deeply secularised world.
Bryan, Chris and Marjetka will each give a 20
minute presentation and there will be time for
discussion and questions. The evening will
conclude with supper. All are welcome!
in St Ambrose’s Church. It tells of the story of the
baby Jesus’ head being broken off the statue and
stolen. We are hoping someone who knows the
whereabouts of the stolen head might see the
article in The Moreland Leader and return the
statue’s missing head! A copy of the article is on
the noticeboard.
BAPTISM TEA
This Thursday evening, 19 May, there
will be a meal and information session
for the parents of children who are

MASS COUNT THIS MONTH

AFTERNOON VOLUNTEERS
Our parish has a number of generous
volunteers who answer the phone and
