novels. Dumas also wrote plays and magazine articles. His most famous works The Count of
Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne first
appeared in serial form. Camille is a sentimental romance about a poor woman who is
befriended by a rich duke who later wishes her to become his mistress. She is saved from that
fate by the love of a poor but good man. Because of his family's disapproval, they must
separate.

Samantha : I love Camille and I can't recommend it enough. It's become one of my favorite
books. I had seen the Greta Garbo movie version of Camille and I can honestly say that the
novel is more heartbreaking. Alexandre Dumas fils's writing was excellent and his tale of
thwarted love is timeless.
Camille is set in 1840s Paris. A young courtesan, Marguerite Gautier, has died and although
she was once the most sought-after courtesan in Paris she died of consumption without any of
her rich friends or benefactors by her side. It seems everyone has forgotten Marguerite except
for Armand Duval, a young man who has countless camellias sent to her grave. The novel goes
back to when Armand and Marguerite were in love and willing to risk everything to be together.
Fate got in the way and led to the beautiful courtesan's dying alone.
The writing style was interesting and very well done. Much like in Wuthering Heights and The
Great Gatsby, the narrator was a minor character who played little part in the action. In fact, the
narrator of Camille didn't even have a name. Also like Wuthering Heights, the narration changes
hand when Armand tells the story of him and Marguerite. Still another part of the novel is told
from Margeurite's perspective. Dumas wove these stories within stories together so skillfully that
the different voices never felt forced. Camille is a classic you should definitely read. Just be
prepared with a box of tissues.

Non so quanto questa recensione potrà avere un senso (sì, potrebbe averne ancora meno di
quelle abituali e...sì, anche io non pensavo fosse possibile).
Mi sono avvicinata a La signora delle camelie con un po' di timore, essenzialmente non sapevo
cosa aspettarmi e avevo paura che l'avrei detestato. Onestamente posso dire che se non fosse
stato scritto da Dumas figlio e se non avessi adorato (eufemismo) Dumas padre, probabilmente
non l'avrei mai letto. E cosa mi sarei persa.
Marguerite Gautier è la cortigiana più richiesta di tutta Parigi e in quanto tale conduce uno stile
di vita agiato, tra balli, feste e serate a teatro, una fragile illusione volta a nascondere quella che
non è altro che una vita vuota, caratterizzata da false amicizie strette in nome dell'interesse e
da un continuo crogiolarsi nel lusso per dimenticare una famiglia che non l'ha mai amata. E solo
quando Armand Duval, giovane perdutamente innamorato di lei, entra nella sua vita, Marguerite
si rende conto di quanto sia profondo l'abisso in cui è sprofondata. Ma il loro è un amore
impossibile, destinato ad avere una fine tragica, distruttivo eppure così totalizzante e per
entrambi di vitale importanza.
Dire che questo libro, davvero breve, mi abbia stupita è estremamente riduttivo, perché in
poche pagine Alexandre Dumas riesce a delineare un personaggio contrastato, dilaniato nella
sua interiorità e a farci provare una sequenza di emozioni contrastanti e indescrivibili. 127

Il personaggio di Marguerite è uno di quelli che rimangono impressi, che non si dimenticano
facilmente.
La sua evoluzione, dall'arroganza e da un'insensibilità sconcertante e insopportabile alla
disponibilità più totale nel sacrificare definitivamente la sua felicità per qualcuno che ama, è
magnifica e straziante e la rende uno personaggi meglio riusciti di cui io abbia mai letto.
Se cercate la storia di un amore felice e a lieto fine state lontano da questo libro (ehi, non è uno
spoiler perché c'è già nella trama), ma se cercate un libro emozionante, la storia di un
personaggio complesso e di un amore straziante e bellissimo leggete La signora delle camelie.
P.s. se volete un consiglio NON comprate questa edizione a meno che non vogliate diventare
cieche/i.
P.p.s. Unica pecca del libro, motivo per cui non ho dato cinque stelle è l'insta-love...non riesco
proprio a reggerlo e inizialmente mi ha dato fastidio...
