Halligan Section: Tools and Equipment Issue Date: 06-2011 Revised: XX-XXXX Objectives • To provide an understanding of the following – Specifications – Use – Maintenance – Safety Specifications • Steel construction with chrome plating • Size ranges from 36” and 11lbs to 30” and 9 lbs • 3 working ends – 6” Fork – 6” Adz – 6” Pike • Hooligan is a three piece halligan – The fork and the adz end is pressed and pinned onto the shaft. – The fork is a little longer Use • Forcible entry – Prying, purchase point etc • Generally used in conjunction with the flat head axe • Can be used in conjunction with a sledge hammer – “Commercial irons” Maintenance • Check for burrs and cracks – File any burrs down with a bastard file • Sharpen all working ends – Avoid over sharpening • Wash with mild soap and water, dry thoroughly • Add thin coat of oil Safety • Wear appropriate PPE – Minimum of helmet, gloves, and eye protection • Full turnouts and SCBA are required when utilizing tool in an IDLH atmosphere or when making entry into a possible IDLH atmosphere • Check surroundings prior to using tool • Ensure the tool is the right tool for the job • Utilize proper hand placement to avoid the “pinch-point”
