What does technology mean
to you?
Starter activity
 Use 4 or 5 post-it notes to write key words or
phrases that come to mind when you think of the
word ‘technology’.
A definition of technology
Most definitions of technology mention the
application of scientific knowledge to solve a
practical problem.
What are the problems being solved with the
technologies above?
Technology: my needs
Activity:
On your own write down the four technologies that you
believe you need most in your life, one on each of the
four cards given to you by your teacher.
Technology : needs
 In a group of 4 students look at the technologies
you’ve written on your cards.
 Do you have any needs in common with others in your
group?
 If you have any cards the same just keep one of them
and discard the others.
 Now, add your group’s technology ‘needs’ cards to
the cards given to you by your teacher.
 One person in the group needs to shuffle all the cards
together and deal them out to the group – so that
each student has roughly the same amount of cards.
 Look at the cards you’ve been dealt.
Let’s negotiate: technology needs
and wants
 Take in turns to place your cards one at a time in one of
the three boxes on the needs and wants sheet. You need to
decide whether the technology on your card is needed,
makes life better/easier or is a luxury to have.

Each box has a maximum amount of
cards that’s allowed. Make sure you
don’t go over the card limit per box.
 If you want to move a card into another
box, it has to be agreed buy the group.
 When you’ve finished the activity let your teacher know.
Needs in common?
Make notes from the video clip of a women from Kenya talking
about a technology that’s making her life better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXnvzt7Lf8&feature=channel&list=UL
Technology : needs in common?
 Now that you’ve watched the video clip imagine you are
this Kenyan woman.
 Move any of the cards on your Technology needs and wants
board to different boxes that might reflect her needs and
wants for technology. (Use extra cards if needed).
 Do her needs differ from yours?
 Now remove the technologies
from the board that you think she
doesn’t have access to.
 Which technologies are you
left with?
 Why are there some technologies
accessible to you and not to her?
If you’ve enjoyed thinking about your
Technology
needs and wants, you might want to find out
more about Technology Justice, everyone’s
