You run in a city where the short
blocks on north-south streets are 0.1
mile long. The long blocks on eastwest streets are 0.15 mile long. You
will run 2 long blocks east, a number of
short blocks south, 2 long blocks west,
then back to your starting point. You
want to run 2 miles. How many short
blocks should you run? Answer: 14
Meaning: You need to run 14 short blocks along with the 4 long blocks in order to run 2 miles.

each. How many dozens do you need
to make?
The cellular phone plan you signed up
for gives you 400 minutes a month
for $35 and charges $.15 for each
additional minute over 400 minutes.

the phone each month and stay within
a budget of $45?
You are responsible for buying supplies for
an upcoming camping trip. You can buy
packages of 32 water bottles for $3.95. You
need to buy enough water so that each
person can have 3 bottles per day for the
next 5 days. There are 23 people going on
the trip. How many packages do you need?
What is the total cost?
You want to be able to split the cost
between all of the campers, what are some
factors you should consider before
announcing your plan?
The highest speed reached in the 1980’s by a solar
powered vehicle was 48.712 miles per hour (mph). This
record was set by a car called the Sunraycer on June 24,
1988 in Mesa, Arizona. How far could the Sunraycer
travel in 2.5 hours at this speed?
In 2011 another record speed was recorded at 88.738
kilometers per hour. How much faster (in mph) was this
speed than the 1988 record mentioned above? Round
your answer to the nearest hundredth.
Can you think of any reason(s) why Arizona might have
been an advantageous state for the testing of the
Sunraycer?
The local painters union received an
unusual and urgent request to paint 2

A furniture salesman earns a base salary of
$14,000 per year. The salesman also receives a
7% commission on his sales. His total sales

year the salesman reported an income of
$55,771 to the IRS. What were his total sales?
A moving company weighs 25 boxes

boxes of clothes did you pack?
Why do you think
moving companies
weigh the boxes?
