 Formed in May 2004
 Funded by grants from the four UK funding bodies
and subscriptions from higher education institutions.
 The Academy's mission is to help institutions,
discipline groups and all staff to provide the best
possible learning experience for their students.
What are Subject Centres?
 There are 24 subject centres forming the subject
network of the Higher Education Academy
 Engineering is based at Loughborough University
 Physical Sciences is based at the University of Hull
 Share good practices between colleagues
 Provide support for learning and teaching activities
 Providing discipline-based opportunities for the
professional development of staff in Universities

• Introduce yourself to the person sat next to you
– Where are they from?
– Which subject area do they work in?
– How long have they been a demonstrator?

• What is a demonstrator? Can you describe what you
do?
– The different roles you perform as a demonstrator
– Problems or issues that you have arisen
– Who is there to help you
