 Formed in May 2004, from a merger of the Institute
for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
(ILTHE), the Learning and Teaching Support Network
(LTSN), and the TQEF National Co-ordination Team
(NCT)
 Funded by grants from the four UK funding bodies,
subscriptions from higher education institutions, and
grant income for specific initiatives.
What is the Engineering
Subject Centre?
 One of 24 subject centres forming the subject




network of the Higher Education Academy
Based at Loughborough University
Employs 10 staff (8 FTE)
Complemented by 9 Associates across the UK
Funded until July 2009
Networking
 The Centre is well established in the UK engineering
community
 Strong brokerage role between national bodies and
engineering in higher education
 Examples:
 Played a major part in the decision and review of the Engineering
Benchmark Statements from the QAA with the Engineering Council
UK and Engineering Professors’ Council
 Working with the Royal Academy of Engineering on “The London
Engineering Project”
 Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning
(CETLs):
