Geospatial Standards Steering Group (GSSG)
• MOD group responsible for the governance of geospatial
standards policy
• It is voluntary and comprises of members from
throughout the MOD Geo Community,
– UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO),
– UK Meteorological Office,
– Defence Geographic Centre (DGC)
– Defence Science and Technology Laboratories (Dstl)
– etc..
• Only concerns itself with geospatial standards policy and
governance

Dstl is part of the

Web Services Technical Working
Group (WSTWG)
Purpose:
– To define the MOD position on Web Service standards and
recommend (to the GSSG) suitable profiles for their use
throughout the MOD community.
Primary Objective:
– Recommend a suitable profile of WMS for use throughout the
UK MOD community.

• 1st meeting was held on December 4th 2009
• Members from throughout MOD and industry attended including
representatives from DSTL, UK Met Office, UKHO, ESRI and Envitia
Conclusions
• MOD requires a profile of WMS to ensure its consistent
implementation throughout MOD.
• The Defence Geospatial Intelligence Working Group (DGIWG)
identified as the most appropriate organisation to ratify and govern
any profile. However…….
– The current DGIWG profile is not suitable in its current form and
requires modification in order to be suitable for use by UK MOD and
requires further work
