Challenges & Constraints of Refurbishment
• Limited insulation with existing façade
retained
• Accessibility for passengers increases open
areas to outside – issue for thermal comfort
• 28 new escalators, 31 new lifts – increase of
energy demand – from 9GWhr to 14

Challenges for CHP
• Complicated contract for ESCO – Works and
maintenance elements
• Unfamiliar contract and risk to Network Rail
• Integrate design & operation into a complex Gateway
project
• High electrical load / low heat demand
• Asset Protection for station operations
• Long terms contracts – 25 years typical
• Asset owners and RAMS acceptance is critical
• Third party access rights and protocol required
Possible Routes – use of sub platform tunnel Networks
Benefits for CHP at New Street
• Significant reduction in Carbon emissions >3,000Ton/yr
& supports BCC carbon reduction targets
• Provide model case for role out to other managed
stations
• Reduction in energy bills
• Use of strategic tunnel network avoiding disruptive
infrastructure works around the city
• Potential for significant expansion of the system with
heat provision to adjacent buildings
• Provision for South side to be ‘CHP ready’
