WHO: Cowboy Battalion
WHAT: 100th Anniversary 5K
WHEN: 29APR16
WHERE: University of Wyoming Main Campus
SUMMARY: This year marks 125 years of the Cowboy
Battalion and 100 years of Army ROTC. To celebrate, Cadets
from the University of Wyoming conducted a 5K foot march.
Every Army ROTC program in the nation conducted their own
celebratory 5K run and the Cowboy Battalion decided to make
theirs into a 5K foot march around the University campus.
Cadets bellowed cadences as they marched the 3.1 miles and
promoted Esprit de corps.
The Cowboy Battalion was first introduced to UW in 1891
requiring all able bodied men at the University to participate in
the Military studies program. It wasn’t until 25 years later that
President Wilson signed the National Defense Act which
brought this training under a single, federally-controlled entity:
The Reserve Officers' Training Corps. As soon as the act was
signed UW applied and was granted a unit. It became one of
the first seven institutions in the nation to install an ROTC unit.
This long standing military tradition at the University of
Wyoming provokes a lot of pride within the community and
especially among the Cadets who join the ranks in the Cowboy
Battalion.
At the end of the 5K march Cadets were able to gather and
enjoy coffee and donuts, a well deserved treat.
