WHO: Cowboy and Golden Buffalo Battalions WHAT: Joint Leadership Training Exercise WHEN: 21-24APR2016 WHERE: Camp Guernsey, Wyoming SUMMARY: The Joint Leadership Training Exercise (JLTX) is an event where the Cowboy Battalion travels to Camp Guernsey, WY to conduct leadership training with another battalion. This spring the University of Colorado Boulder Golden Buffalo Battalion trained with UW for the first time. During their time at JLTX, Cadets participated in activities that allowed them to build camaraderie and increase their knowledge of military operations. Cadets started the weekend at the land navigation course, which tests Cadets on their basic soldier skills. During land navigation the MSIs were put in groups with the MSIIs and the MSIII’s conducted the training solo. The next day consisted of the completion of the obstacle course by the integrated squads. Some of the events included crawling under barbed wire, scaling different obstacles and facing fears of heights through rope climbing and other events. At the end each platoon chose one squad to compete for the best squad. Following the obstacle course Cadets were able to hear from General Peter Schoomaker (retired) later that evening. General Schoomaker is a former Chief of Staff of the Army and University of Wyoming graduate. He spoke to the Cadets about leadership and adapting as a leader. Cadets were given the opportunity to ask General Schoomaker any questions they had. Following the speech by General Schoomaker, MSIII Cadets conducted the first key leader engagement. They met with village elders and conducted a meeting where they built rapport with the village elders and eventually got invited to come to the village the next morning. That next morning the platoons moved out to the villages to conduct the second key leader engagement. The platoons were able to gather information to conduct an ambush on a known area of travel. During the ambush they collected intel that gave them information on a known location of SAPA forces leading the platoons to conduct an attack. After the attack the platoons gathered at the company assembly area to conduct the final mission which was a movement to contact. Dog tired and ready to go home, Cadets moved back to the barracks were they enjoyed pizza as they cleaned their weapons.
