The provision of sports activities and
opportunities in Britain is the result of the
interaction between the private, public and
voluntary sectors
Sports
Private
sector
Public
sector
Voluntary
sector
The public sector is the local authority
The local authority is elected by local people
Its role is to provide a service to the local people and to improve
the quality of their lives
Sport /exercise is part of this service
The majority of the provision comes from the public sector. Its role is to
improve the quality of life for its taxpayers and benefits society . This
includes promoting health and well being of each person
Why does the private sector provide sport?
The private sector consists of business men and women
Business wants to make a profit
To make a profit in sport it offers:
• goods and services for hire or sale (high quality)
• facilities and activities to play or watch
• clubs and activities available to members only.
The voluntary sector includes all the sports clubs and organisations
that are run by volunteers (community centres church groups)
The volunteers are enthusiasts, who care about sport/exercise and
are interested in it
Because of this, they give up their time and energy for free, to help
people like you!


For each sector give 2 examples of how a
specific group is catered for.
For example, over 65’s chair aerobics at
Tottenham community church (the groups is
older people and the sector is voluntary)
