SPECIAL
EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Parent Workshop
16.09.11
The school has an ‘Inclusion Manager’.
This role is often called SENCO,
(Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator)
as it covers SEN.
It also covers some other vulnerable groups
including Gifted and Talented children.
All pupils have access to the National
Curriculum.
Differentiation is designed to meet the
needs of individual learners.
At Castledown we ensure that
all pupils are included.
The expectations for SEN children are
the same as for those children without
SEN, i.e. we expect and set targets
based on two sub levels (4 points)
progress in each academic year. This
expectation is the same regardless of
the level of SEN.
 The term ‘Special Educational Needs’ applies to all pupils
who have SEN because of:– Cognitive and learning difficulties, including general learning
difficulties (GLD) and specific learning difficulties (SpLD, i.e.
dyslexia)
– Communication and interaction difficulties including speech,
language and communication needs (SLCN), autistic spectrum
disorders (ASD)
– Emotional, behavioural and social difficulties (EBSD)
– Sensory/physical difficulties, including physical difficulties (PD),
visual impairment (VI), and hearing impairment (HI).
At Castledown pupils with SEN fall into the
following categories:



Concern
School Action

Statement
(C)
(SA)
(SA+)
(S)
At Castledown
 School Action = 51children (15.22%)
 School Action + = 18 children (5.37%)
 Statements = 10 children (2.98%)
 Total children on SEN register = 79 children
= 23.58%
 National figure = 19.6%
If a teacher has a pupil in their class, who is not making
academic progress or is working more than one sub-level
below the age-related expectation, then that pupil may
need to be included on the SEN register.
If a teacher has concerns about a pupil they talk to the
Inclusion Manager and the support needed is decided.
This support may be from within school or where
necessary help from outside agencies is requested.
If your child is on the Special Needs Register we will be
sending you a letter to let you know about the support
they are receiving.
If you think your child has
special needs
Come and talk to me or talk to
their class teacher
