Expectations & Communication

     What do you expect of the players you are coaching? (Remember their age & experience) and how do you communicate it to them.

Training.

Pre-match.

At breaks.

During the game.

After the game.

Planning

The best time to get players to understand what you require of them during a game is at training.

The way you train must have relevance to what you expect of them during a game.

Think about the relevance of every training drill you give them.

Consistency

There is no one way to coach, but you do need a system or way in which you want the team to play (again remembering their age & experience) You need to make sure your instructions at all times are consistent.

If you make changes to certain aspects of the game plan, then you must relay this to them so they are very clear on the changes you want. Again use training to do this.

If they are confused then you haven’t explained it well enough.

Game Day

This is most difficult time because of the urgency of time, so be very clear in your thinking on this day.

If you are calm it will be a positive for the players.

Don’t overburden them with instructions. The game plan should be well known to them unless it is very early in season.

No.1 let them know at every break, before the game, quarter, half and three quarter where they are playing.

Game Day.

Keep key points for players as a group down to two or three main points each game and stick to them (consistency). It’s difficult to remember much under the pressure of the game.

Keep positive and talk to them about what you want. For example Say “Kick it long”, not “don’t kick short.” It’s easier for the brain to decipher what to do not not what to do.

.

Other reasons are: Improve their skills.

2.

Do something they are good at.

Why Children Play Sports.

If they perceive the experience to be positive, they will be motivated to try harder.

Greater effort leads to advancement in skills.

Why Children Quit Sports The Primary Reasons are; 1. Not having fun.

2. Over emphasis on winning by coach and parents.

3. Being yelled at for mistakes.

4. They perceive they are not good enough and lose intrinsic motivation.
