Coaching Philosophy (for U8-11)
1. Every training session we conduct will be with the ball
•
No fitness/running without the ball.
2. Maximise decision making
•
•
Carry out activities where decision making and actions are required.
Make the training sessions as close as possible to the real game

3. Our coaches need to be qualified in coaching. For this age group
the requirement is the “Skills Training Certificate” U8 to U12
Under 8, 9, 10 and 11 Model Sessions
At this age the children are ready for a more structured approach
to training. In every session the focus is on one of the core skills,
from the beginning until the end of the session.
The “theme based sessions” are:
• Running with the Ball
• First Touch
• One v One
• Striking / Passing the ball
These model sessions can be found in the FFA National Curriculum at http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/site/_content/document/00000099source.pdf
The Skill Training Phase sessions consist of 3 components:
1. Skill introduction, this is the warm-up as well as an introduction to the designated
core skill for this session. This is the only part of the session where drill-type exercises
should be used, but the creative coach can include elements of decision-making.
2. Skill training, this is the part of the session where conscious teaching and learning of
the designated core skill takes place.
- Lots of repetition in game realistic scenarios!
- Task-based coaching
- Effective feedback
-Use of questioning (ask players ‘why did you choose that option?’)
3. Skill game, a game where as much as possible all the elements of the real game are
present but organised in a way that the designated core skill has to be used regularly.
- Skill games are preferably small sided games to stimulate the number
of repetitions/touches!
- The players play, the coach observes if learning has taken place.
Game Day
1. Arrive Early for a gentle warm up.
2. Player formations:
• 7v7 1 x GK 3 defenders 3 attackers
•
9v9 1 x GK 3 defenders 2 midfielders 3 attackers
3. Rotate Goalkeeper each half.
4. Equal time for all players.
For Parents
1. Please let the kids play without instructions. Think of it like a
classroom with the coach as the teacher. Would you go into your
child’s class and yell instructions?
• If you want to be involved become a coach/assistant-coach. We
are always looking for volunteers. Contact Paul Kyte @
[email protected]
2. Respect the players. Do encourage all (opposition and your child’s
team) by clapping when they show good football skills and
creativity such as taking players on, running with the ball.
3. Respect the Instructing referee all players and officials from all
clubs. Click on the link for FA video BrightonSC Calls for RESPECT
