Purpose

The purpose of the Future Game document is to outline The Football Associations beliefs on how the game of football should be played and how young players can be developed to meet the demands of the game in the future

Physical – players now cover 50% more distance now than they did in the mid sixties – not only covering more ground but covering it at much higher speeds Technical – The game is quicker – the speed of the ball as it travels between players in passing sequences is faster, more passes per game are made than 10 years ago, players regularly reach 80% pass success rate during games. Consequently there are more passing and receiving situations in games 20% more than in 2002 Tactical – central defenders are expected to move forward with the ball, full backs are expected to operate as wingers, midfield players have the licence to break forward up to and beyond forward players knowing that there vacated positions will have been filled.

These changes to traditional positions indicate the obsession with team shape is being replaced with moving, interchangeable footballing athletes who are capable of operating effectively wherever they are required

Purpose of Grassroots football

An introduction to the enjoyment of playing the game A setting where children who want to play have an opportunity to do so An environment where children can develop their skills and learn to play the game A challenging but supportive arena where children can learn from their mistakes without undue pressure and anxiety A culture in which coaches and parents encourage and support children to get better and improve their skills An opportunity to develop a culture of practice, appropriate challenge, fun and enjoyment

As Junior clubs, in many instances have taken over the role of informal play, the role of the coach is integral in ensuring this positive first experience of the game of football

Playing Philosophy - Attacking

• Football should be played with an efficient, economical, measured, possession based approach, where pass quality combined with intelligent and timely support and movement lead to progress and penetration through the thirds of the field to provide goal-scoring opportunities IF counter attacking possibilities are denied.

• To defend effectively and efficiently a team should display a controlled, calculated and assertive approach where all players contribute and have a clear understanding of the tactical objectives being used to regain possession of the ball • What will this look like in your sessions / games?
