IDOE, what ever we are….

Changing History
• Few will have the greatness to bend
history itself; but each of us can
work to change a small portion of
events, and in the total of all those
acts will be written the history of
this generation.
– Robert F. Kennedy June 6, 1966
Service = Happiness
• I do not know which will be the
destiny of each one of you; But one
think I do know. The only ones
among you who will be really happy
will be those who have sought and
found the way to serve.
Albert Schweitzer
Small Words - Big
Actions
• We have too many high-sounding
words, and too few actions that
correspond with them.
– Abigail Adams
– U.S. feminist & wife of President John Adams
Significant Insight
• What lies ahead of us, and what lies
behind us are insignificant to what
lives within us.
– Oliver Wendell Holmes 1858
Just Thinking
• If everybody is thinking alike then
somebody isn’t thinking.
– General George S. Patton 1945
Why or Why Not?
• Some men see things as they are and
say “why?’. I dream things that never
were and say, “why not?’
– John F. Kennedy, President, 1960-1963
Silence
• In the end, we will remember not the
words of our enemies, but the silence
of our friends.
– Martin Luther king, JR. 1929-1968
Contributions
• When you cease to make a
contribution, you begin to die.
– Eleanor Roosevelt
Responsibility
• Responsibility is the thing people
dread most of all. Yet it is the one
thing in the world that develops us…
– Frank Crane
One is Not a Lonely Number
• I am the only one; but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can
do something. I will not refuse to do
the something I can do.
– Helen Keller
Just a Matter of Time
• If every American donated five
hours a week, it would equal the labor
of 20 million full-time volunteers.
– Whoopi Goldberg
Perseverance
• We can do anything we want if we
stick to it long enough.
– Helen Keller
Let’s Talk
• A good discussion increases the
dimensions of everyone who takes
part.
– Randolph Bourne
Practice Makes People
• Where do we think citizens come
from? You can’t enter full-blown into
public life at 35. You need to
practice. Practice should start early - at age 12-14.
– Danny Schillings
Change is Good
• Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed citizens can
change the world; indeed, it’s the
only thing that ever has.
– Margaret Mead
Actions Speak Louder than Words
• How wonderful it is that nobody need
wait a single moment before starting
to improve the world
– Anne Frank
To Serve and To Learn
• The servant-leader is servant first….it begins
with the natural feeling that one wants to serve,
to serve, first. Then conscious choice brings one
to aspire to lead…the difference manifests itself
in the care taking by the servant-first to make
sure that other people’s highest priority needs
are being served. The ‘best test’ and difficult to
administer, is: do those being served grow as
persons; do they while being served, become
healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more
likely themselves to become servants? And, what
is the effect on the least privileged in society;
will they benefit, or at least, not be further
Happiness Is...
• If you want happiness for an hour,
– take a nap.
• If you want happiness for a day,
– go fishing.
• If you want happiness for a year,
– inherit a fortune.
• If you want happiness for a lifetime,
– help someone else.
– Old Chinese Proverb
The Gift of Giving
• The greatest grace of a gift,
perhaps, is that it anticipates and
admits of no return.
– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Service… The Greatest
Gift
• Anyone can be great….because anyone
can serve. You don’t have to have a
college degree to serve. You don’t
have to make your subject and verb
agree to serve. You only need a heart
full of grace - a soul generated by
love.
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
Character
• If you think about what you ought to
do for other people, your character
will take care of itself.
– President Woodrow Wilson
Wisdom of Dr. Seuss
• You have brains in your head, you
have feet in your shoes. You can
steer yourself in any direction you
choose.
» Dr. Seuss
Just Do Something
• I am only one, but still, I am one. I
cannot do everything but I can do
something. And, because I cannot do
everything, I will not refuse to do
what I can
– Helen Keller
Trail Blazing
• Do not follow where the path may
lead. Go instead where there is no
path and leave a trail.
– Anonymous
