Winter sports were brought into the
Olympic programme through the
organization of special Winter Games,
first held in France at Chamonix in
1924, with competitions in ice hockey,
speedskating, figure skating, and skiing.
These are still the basic events of the
winter programme, with the addition of
bobsleigh and toboggan races, and ice
hockey.
Hockey is played on a rink forty metres long by six players on each of two teams.
It is very interesting, fast, and dynamic game.
It is played with a puck and long straight sticks with an angle at the bottom. The team that
scores the most goals wins.
One more exciting kind of winter sports is ski-jumping.
Sportsmen skate with a high speed at the distance of 500–1500 meters around an oval ice arena. It
has been in the Olympic Program since 1992 (Iberville, France).
It is a combination of Ski races with shooting at the targets. It consists of individual
ski race, sprint, pursuit race with consequent relay and mixed relay between men
and women, and a mass start.
