Teen Living
Analyze how families and individuals manage living space
The space which everyone needs for
him/herself and his/her belongings
 Too many people living in a small home
means not enough private space
 Furniture arrangement can create a sense
of personal space in a shared room

Personal Space
Family space is shared when it is used by
more than one person
 The best way to manage shared space is
to plan a schedule for use
 Living space is invaded when a family
member enters or searches another
persons space
 Sharing a room can teach shared
responsibility which helps in other
relationships

Shared Space
The key to organizing space is to group
like items together
 A good first step is to organize the items
in a room, then find containers to store
them in
 Efficient storage keeps frequently used
items easily accessible

Space Organization
When drawing a scaled floor plan,
remember to use the same scale for
furniture and the room
 Scaled floor plans can help arrangement
of furniture
 Large pieces of furniture should be
arranged first

Scaled Floor Plans
Traffic pattern is the path that people walk
through a room
 Ideally people do not have to weave in
and out around the furniture in a room or
have a tight squeeze between furniture

Traffic Pattern
Plan and practice TWO escape routes in
case of a fire
 If a person catches on fire, they should
Stop, Drop, and Roll
 Smoke detectors should be placed at each
level of the home

Fire Safety
Falling is the most common cause of fatal
home accidents
 Medicines and poisons should be kept out
of reach of children, behind locked doors
 Most home poisonings involve young
children
 Poisonous items should be kept in original
containers

Home Safety
To avoid electrical shock, unplug electrical
appliances before cleaning them
 Make sure hands are dry when using
electrical appliances
 Cords that are cut &/or have exposed
wires should be replaced before use

Electrical Safety
Security systems call local emergency
numbers if a burglar tries to enter the
house
 Special monitors in the hallways and
lobby can help people that live in
apartments feel safe from break-ins
