GLAST LAT Project
DOE/NASA Review, March 31, 2004
Mitigating late module arrival
• The project is focusing on integration and test of the first
tower. The following are areas to work as we learn more about
actual performance
– I&T can use the additional time for more training and
testing to reduce risk in integration and improve
productivity.
– Some part of System Test could be moved earlier and
tested with a partial LAT configuration
– System Test Period is 2 Shift/5 Days, could be up to 3
Shift/7 Days
– Increase the production rate of modules by working second
shifts, etc.
– Investigate compressing the environmental test schedule
from the present 15 weeks

The LAT is a challenging instrument
Significant technical progress -- no major issues outstanding
Producing flight hardware
Overall project funding is adequate if stay on schedule
Funding in the current fiscal year is an issue being worked
Schedule is challenging
– Focusing on installation of the first flight tower in the grid
– Mitigating delays as they occur
• Delay in completing Grid design – Qualify 2nd grid
• Delay in arrival of CAL ASICs -- Load parts before qualification
• Tracker delay due to test anomalies – Proceed with fabrication
before testing is complete
Project management needs to be proactive in identifying plans to mitigate
potential future schedule delays
A strong, talented staff that is committed to delivering this instrument and
doing the science
