Starting the Game
Players will wait
for the officials
to blow whistle
to rush for the
balls
All balls must
be checked back
to the team’s
white volleyball
line before
engaging
opponents
The Game


Games begin with 6 balls on the center line. Players
will begin behind their respective end lines
The official will ask both teams if they are ready and
will blow the whistle at their discretion to start play.
◦ Any head starts may be blown dead and play will restart
 2 infractions by the same team will result in a loss of 1 player
by the team
◦ When whistle is blown, teams sprint to the center line to
retrieve the balls: MINIMAL CONTACT WILL BE ALLOWED! At
the officials discretion they will allow momentum to cross the
centerline

Once balls are retrieved, the balls must be
checked back to the end-line of the volleyball
court.
◦ Cannot hit players when initially retrieving the balls:
any player illegally hit will remain in
The Game



Players may not cross center line (except at initial
rush), but they may lean over the center line to
retrieve balls
First team to legally eliminate opposing players or the
team with the most players left at the end of regulation
time will be declared the winner.
Each team gets One 30 second timeout per game.
◦ Timeouts must be indicated to any of the officials
 Once timeout is granted, all players in must stay in bounds and subs remain
out of bounds
◦ Timeouts may be called by the officials for injuries
◦ Timeouts shall only be granted when there are no live balls in the air

Each team will keep the balls they had when timeout
was called
◦ Balls will be put on the floor on the end-line
 Balls cannot be touched until the whistle is blown
The Game


The object of the game is to eliminate all
players by getting them “OUT”
A player is considered “OUT” when:
◦ A player is hit by an opposing player with a thrown ball AND the
ball subsequently falls to the ground or touches a dead ball object
(ceiling, dividers, held ball, etc.)
◦ A player catches a ball thrown by the opponent prior to the ball
becoming dead
◦ In an attempt to dodge a ball a player steps out of bounds on
either the sideline or the end line.
◦ A player drops a ball being used to deflect a thrown ball
◦ A player crosses the centerline
 Exception: The initial rush to start the game
◦ Intentionally Targeting the head
◦ Discretional infractions called by the referee
Dodgeball Tournament Rules

Timing and court restrictions:
◦ At the 1 – minute mark, play will be stopped.
 All remaining players will be instructed inside the volleyball lines
(white lines)
 Players may cross to the opposite second line (to the 10 foot
line) for the remainder of the game
◦ Each team will be given 3 dodgeballs to start the last
minute of the game regardless of the number they
had at stoppage of play
◦ Balls will be put on the floor on the end-line
 Balls cannot be touched until the whistle is blown
◦ If neither team has been eliminated at conclusion
 Team with greater number of players is declared the
winner
 IF THERE IS AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF PLAYERS = 1 –
minute sudden death over time
Last Minute of Each Game
Players must
stay within white
All remaining
on-court players
volleyball court
lines at 1 minute
and less
may cross to
the opposing
white line
Sudden Death Overtime


If after the last minute of play, each team still has the
same amount of remaining players, a sudden death
overtime will occur
Each team will be given 3 dodgeballs to start the game
◦ Balls will be put on the floor on the endline
 Balls cannot be touched until the whistle is blown

Play will be in the volleyball court (white lines)
◦ To start overtime, remaining players will start on their
respective back lines & the officials will start play by blowing a
whistle at their discretion

First team to eliminate a player from the opposing
team will win that game
◦ If opposing players are hit simultaneously, the sudden death
overtime will continue
 If the players hit simultaneously are the last players, both will
remain in
Substitutes & Eliminated Players

There are no substitutes after the start of a
game except for injury
◦ All players may be involved in the game, but if the
number is over 6 players, the player not starting the
game would be the first in on a caught ball

Players eliminated must line up at their
sideline (left sideline) & may not interfere
with play
◦ First person eliminated will be closest to end-line to
re-enter play when a ball is caught by a teammate
 Teams caught putting in players out of order will lose
the illegal player entering the court as well as the
player who caught the ball
The Game

At no time is INTENTIONAL use of the feet allowed, including
kicking or using the feet to retrieve balls
◦ Incidental contact by the feet may be allowed at the discretion of the officials

Concealing the ball in ones clothing to gain an advantage is
considered an unfair act. That player is automatically OUT ( J.J.
Vogel Rule)

Using the ball to shield: When a thrown ball deflects off of
another ball held by a player, that ball becomes DEAD
immediately.
◦ Caught deflected balls do not count as getting a player “OUT”
◦ If the player using the ball to deflect drops the ball, that player is “OUT”.
◦ Balls that are dropped by deflection cannot be saved
Deflections


Deflections off the floors, walls, officials, baskets,
backboards, track railing, and balls are “dead balls” and
do not count as an out. ANYTHING THAT IS NOT A
PERSON.
Deflections off a teammate do count and all players hit
are out, provided the ball was not caught INBOUNDS
◦ A player may attempt to save themselves or another player by
catching a ball in bounds
◦ Any teammate of a player hit can attempt to catch a ball out of
bounds, but their feet must remain in bounds
 Balls caught out of bounds by a teammate of a player hit, the ball
will be treated as a ball retrieval (out of bounds). The thrower is
in and the player hit is out.

If a thrower hits their own teammate, the ball becomes
dead and the person hit is still in. (No friendly fire)
◦ Example: A1 throws and hits A2 in the shoulder, the ball then hits
B1 in the leg and falls to the floor. Ruling: No one is out, the ball
was dead once it hit A2.
Deflections

If a ball hits another ball, which a player has in their
possession, it does not make either player out
◦ Example: A1 throws the ball and B3 who puts the ball up in front
of them to defend themselves. The thrown ball contacts B3’s ball
and deflects out of bounds. B3 held on to his/her ball through the
play, both players remain in.


If a ball hits a player, then hits a dead ball area or is
out of bounds, the thrower is in and the player(s) hit
are out
If a player throws a ball and hits an opponent & the
deflection is caught by another opponent, the thrower
is out and both opponents are still in (an additional
player may come in due to the caught ball)
Suicide Kills & Center line

Players may attempt to get someone out by suicide kill.
◦ This is when a player jumps over the center line to hit an opponent
with the ball and get them out.
◦ Player attempting must release ball before hitting the ground
◦ In this situation, if the thrower successfully hits the defender with
the thrown ball, both players are out.

Center line infractions will void out a players throw.
◦ Example: Player A attempts a suicide kill but steps on the center
line as he jumps. Player A hits player B with the ball. Ruling: Player
A is out since he stepped on the center line voiding his throw. And
player B is still in play.
Bench Personnel
Any subs or eliminated players may not interfere with the
game. Any attempts to obstruct the opponent or retrieve a
ball will result in elimination of a player on the court. This
decision is at the discretion of the officials
 Substitutes must enter the game in the order that they were
eliminated and must line up on their sideline opposite the
referee.

◦ Example: Team A has had 4 players eliminated and their best
player was just eliminated, making him the 5th eliminated player.
He must go to the end of the line and will be the 5th person back
in the game if his team can catch 5 balls.

CO-REC SUBSTITUTION RULES IN THE WORKINGS,
REMIND ME TOMORROW TO LET YOU KNOW FINAL
DECISION.
Delay of Game

Delaying the game (holding the balls, standing in the
corner, or rolling balls) is not allowed
◦ Players holding a ball for 10 seconds or failing to retrieve a ball on
their side for 10 seconds or more will be called “OUT” (This will be
done by corner officials)
◦ Any player not deemed to be actively making an attempt to engage an
opponent or that does not attempt to throw at the opponents will be
declared out at the officials discretion
◦ Players that roll balls to the other side on purpose or lobs the ball into
areas where opponents are not standing will be called “OUT”
 Example: When 1 player is left they cannot wait for players to throw balls
at them. They must make a legitimate attempt to throw balls at the
opponent.

POP QUIZ!
◦ Hope you guys were paying attention 
◦ Scenario 1: Team A= Throwing Team, Team B= Dodging Team
 A1 throws a ball at B3 who has the ball deflect off of
his/her chest and bounce high into the air. Teammate B5
sees the ball and deflects it with a held dodgeball to B6
who catches the ball.
◦ What’s the Call?

Answer:
◦ B3 is out and the thrower A1 is still in.
 Once a ball makes contact with another ball it is
now dead. Once B5 deflected the ball with their
own ball they effectively eliminated their own
player.
 Need to sell this call!

POP QUIZ!

Scenario 2: Team A= Throwing Team, Team B = Dodging Team
◦ Ball thrown by A5 contacts B3 cleanly and ricochets off of
ball held by teammate B4. The contact from the ricochet
catches B4 by surprise and causes B4 to drop his/her
held ball.
 What’s the Call?

Answer:
◦ Both B3 and B4 will be out! The clean hit on
B3 causes them to be eliminated. If a thrown
or ricocheted live ball forces a player to lose
control of their own ball they are out!
◦ To make it very simple, if a player loses control
of their held ball because of another LIVE ball
they will be eliminated.

Next Question:
◦ A3 runs out of bounds to retrieve a ball, while
out of bounds he hits B4 in the leg, a second
after that B5 hits A3 in the chest while A3 is
still out of bounds
 What is the call?

Scenario 4 Team A= Throwing Team, Team B= Dodging Team
◦ Player A4 legally hits player B6 with a thrown ball. Noticing
the live ball in the air, teammate B5 runs near the sideline in
an attempt to catch the ball which bounced off of B6. While B5
is pursuing the live ball, Player A3 throws a ball at B5 who
dodges the throw by stepping on the sideline. After dodging
the throw, B5 returns to play and catches the initial ball which
ricocheted off of B6.
 What’s the call?

Answer:
◦ Both B5 and B6 are out! A two player swing!
◦ B6 is eliminated because of the legally thrown
ball, B5 is eliminated because of dodging out of
bounds.
◦ The catch by B5 is voided because they were
out before they caught the ball.
 Must be legal to make the play, technically after
they dodged out of bounds they are no longer in
the game.

Scenario 5:
◦ At the beginning of the game A1 and B3 contact each other at
the center line going for a ball. B3 grabs the ball and
immediately hits A1. A3, who checked his ball back, hits B3
with a ball.
 What’s the call?

Answer:
◦ Only B3 is eliminated. All of the dodgeballs
need to be checked back to the end volleyball
line before they become live. Minimal contact
on the initial rush is ok.
Final Quiz Question

Scenario 5 Team A= Throwing Team, Team B= Dodging Team
◦ A1 notices player B3 on the ground close to the center line. A1
charges at B3 and rifles a ball directly into the face of B3 from
point-blank range. B3 is visibly frustrated and runs at A1 and
tackles him to the ground. Both players wrestle with one
another on the ground as players from both teams run to the
aide of their teammates.
 What’s the call/ What do you do?
Answer: Kick em Out!
