Basketball Notes

 Traveling - a violation for two or more steps without dribbling the ball  Double-dribbling - a violation when a player uses both hands to dribble, or stops dribbling and begins again  Foul - illegal contact between offensive and defensive player that impedes progress or affects the shot

 Tip-off - a jump ball between two opposing players at mid-court to start the game  Rebound - a move in which a player catches the ball, after a missed shot  Dr. James Naismith invented basketball to keep students active in the winter. They originally used peach baskets on opposite ends of the court.

 Turnover - when the possession of the ball changes, other than a rebound or following a scored point  Field goal - worth two points and is a shot that passes over and through the basket from within the three-point line  Free-throw - is worth one point and is an unguarded shot from the free throw line awarded after certain fouls

 Center - usually the tallest player who shoots close shots to the basket, is the last line of defense, and rebounds often  Forward - is a tall player who controls a lot of the activity in the lane, rebounds frequently, and shoots short range shots

 Shooting guard - is a pretty reliable defender who also serves as a secondary ball handler and has a consistent outside shot  Point guard - is the leader of the offense who passes and dribbles most often. They also set up their teammates, shoots, and drives when needed.
