
John B. Denton was born in Tennessee in
July, 1806 but moved to Arkansas when
he was a young boy. When John was 20
years old, he became a preacher. He was
a talented speaker and often spent time
away from his family traveling to different
cities and states.

John Denton moved his family to
Clarksville, Texas in hopes of building a
ministry in Texas. With his expanding
family, he discovered that he would not be
able to support his family financially alone
as a preacher so he began to study law.

John became a lawyer and continued to
travel to court sessions throughout the
newly established territories in North
Texas and continued to preach when he
could. He became well known and was
also named captain of a company by the
Texas Military.

In 1841, John B. was shot and killed by
Indians after he and his military group
took down two of the Indians villages.

Years later, one of the newly found areas
established in North Texas was named
after John B. Denton. Both the city and
county of Denton are named after him.

In 1901, John B. Denton’s remains where
buried on the corner of the Denton County
Courthouse.
