Hooke’s Law Orbital Motion
Reduced-Gravity Flight Experiment
What Happens When...?
Isaac Newton’s First Law of Motion: an object at
rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion
will stay in motion in a straight line with a
constant speed...
INERTIA
Centripetal Force
So, if something moves in a circle, there must be
a reason.
centripetal = centrum + petere (N. Latin)
= center + to seek
What keeps each of these things orbiting?
Planets around a star...
Moons around a planet...
Electrons around a nucleus...
Tennis ball around hand...
And what shapes are these orbits?
In our experiment...
Hooke’s Law
F=k·x
F = force
x = stretch of the spring
k = spring constant
Hooke’s Law Orbits
Two masses, connected by a spring, will be set spinning by a turntable
apparatus. When released, the masses will (in general) oscillate inward
and outward as they also orbit the system center of mass.

Who will get sick on the 0g flight?
Results of a student poll prior to flight, as a histogram.
