In Greece there are over 30 sports clubs most of which only have
football teams. In the first division, Superleague, there are 16

as a Greek record until the new javelin was introduced in 1999.
Christos Papanikolaou (born November 25, 1941), a retired Greek pole vaulter.
On 24 October 1970 he jumped 5.49 metres in Athens and set a world record.

In my school, Model Experimental Junior High School of Macedonia, we practice
football, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, aerobics, traditional dancing, tennis,
handball and athletics. We have had a lot of achievements in these disciplines.

There are many famous athletes coming from my region. Some of them
are :

Charalambos (Babis) Xanthopoulos (born 29 August 1956), a former
Greek footballer. During his career he played for Iraklis and Pierikos,
2 Greek F.C. He earned 27 caps for the Greece national football team,
and participated in UEFA Euro 1980.
•
Alketas ("Alkis") Panagoulias (born 30 May 1934), a Greek, former
association football player and manager. He managed the national
teams of both Greece and the United States. He also manages
several clubs, including Olympiacos, whom he managed to three 1st
Division, Superleague, championships.

holidays in your own country?
If I had to spend my holidays in my country I would choose the following
three sports:
• Football as it is a very common sport and also is one of my favourites.

• Aerobics as I think it is a good way to exercise and have fun at the
same time.

In Greece the three most frequently
practiced sports in summer are
swimming, water polo and sailing
as Greece has wonderful seas.
In winter, the sports practiced are ice
skating, skiing and snowboarding.
Football, basketball and volley are all-time-season
sports.

If that is the case in which sport did they set it and what is his/her
name?
Sofia Sakorafa (born April 29, 1957), a former javelin thrower. She broke the
world record on 1982-09-16 with a throw of 74.20 meters. That mark stood
as a Greek record until the new javelin was introduced in 1999.
Christos Papanikolaou (born November 25, 1941), a retired Greek pole vaulter.
On 24 October 1970 he jumped 5.49 metres in Athens and set a world record.

Question 12: Which sports do you practise in your school?
In my school, Model Experimental Junior High School of Macedonia, we practice
football, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, aerobics, traditional dancing, tennis,
handball and athletics. We have had a lot of achievements in these disciplines.

Three “trend sports” practised in my country are football, basketball and
volleyball.

Question 14 : Are there any famous athletes coming from your
region? Talk about them.
There are many famous athletes coming from my region. Some of them
are :

Charalambos (Babis) Xanthopoulos (born 29 August 1956), a former
Greek footballer. During his career he played for Iraklis and Pierikos,
2 Greek F.C. He earned 27 caps for the Greece national football team,
and participated in UEFA Euro 1980.
•
Alketas ("Alkis") Panagoulias (born 30 May 1934), a Greek, former
association football player and manager. He managed the national
teams of both Greece and the United States. He also manages
several clubs, including Olympiacos, whom he managed to three 1st
Division, Superleague, championships.

Question 15: Which 3 sports would you choose if you spent your
holidays in your own country?
If I had to spend my holidays in my country I would choose the following
three sports:
• Football as it is a very common sport and also is one of my favourites.
• Swimming as in Greece we have many beautiful islands, which are an
ideal place for holidays.
• Aerobics as I think it is a good way to exercise and have fun at the
same time.

Question 8: How many sports clubs are there in your country and
which is the most successful?
In Greece there are over 30 sports clubs most of which only have
football teams. In the first division, Superleague, there are 16
football clubs and in the second, football league, 17. As there Of the
four clubs the most known and successful football club is P.A.O.K.
F.C.
