AP/5 １月２８日 〜んです There are two ways to make a statement Simple report of the facts: バスが来ませんでした。 An explanation: バスが来なかったんです。 バスが来ませんでした。 • Simple reporting of the facts • Not connected with any apology or explanation バスが来なかったんです。 • Tells the facts (the bus didn’t come) • Implies an explanation (late for the appointment, etc.) • 〜んですlinks what the sentence says and what it explains or accounts for 明日テストがあるんです。 Explains the reason for something, whether a reason is called for or not: • だから、一緒に映画に行けない。 • だから、つかれた顔をしています。 • だから、今スタバで勉強している。 • だから、だから、だから．．．． トイレに行きたいんです。 • • • • だから、今水飲みたくない。 だから、今せきから立ち上がりました。 だから、走っています。 だから、こうやって立っています。 〜んですfollows short form of predicate • Can be negative 行きたくないんです。 食べなかったんです。 • Can be affirmative 行きたいんです。 食べたんです。 Can follow nouns アメリカ人なんです。 • だからけんじゅうを使います。 • だから大きい車をうんてんしています。 侍です。 • だから刀を持っています。 • だからこのヘアスタイルをしています。 can follow adjectives… きたないんです。 • だから車を洗ったんです。 • だから、部屋をそうじしているんです。 気持ち悪いんです。 • だからここで寝ています。 • だから、今．．．ウ、ウ、ウ．．．オエッ！ 〜んです can be used in questions to invite explanations, further clarifications from the person you’re talking to: Q: どうして彼とわかれたんですか。 A: 彼、全然お風呂に入らないんです。 Q: どうしたんですか。(I’m asking because you look like ___, so something terrible must have happened) A: 犬が死んだんです。 (obviously, that’s why I look so bad) どうしたんですか？ ジョン君、うれしそうですね。 とも君、悲しそうですね。 どうしてんですか。 どうしたんですか。 あら、大丈夫ですか、ジャレッド君。 明日、一緒に映画を見に行けますか。 宿題 1.
