CHARTER COLLEGE The post 16 experience MEET THE TEAM •Ms Davies – Director of Learning •Mr Reid – Head of Year 12 •Ms Williams – Post 16 Progress Leader •Ms Proctor – Public Affairs Manager WHAT MAKES SUCCESS AT POST-16? Choose the right subjects + Work hard! CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUBJECTS • 3 or 4 subjects based on GCSE results – it could be better to do just 3 • Offers are A, B or C (C is a guided offer) • Summer homework will let students know if they really like a subject • Bear in mind plans for university (facilitating subjects) • Be realistic - GCSE results don’t lie! WORK HARD 6th Form is a student’s job! Students MUST commit themselves to: • Minimum 40 hours per week of work (like a job!) • 100% attendance and punctuality (like a job!) All homework must be at their target grade – or do it again! Charter College must be the #1 priority in their life Students need to use their increased freedom responsibly REINVENT YOURSELF! • Start as you mean to go on • The first five weeks of the first term will define what happens in the next two years • There is very limited flexibility to change subjects once students have started and only if agreed by the Director of Learning THESE TWO YEARS ARE RELENTLESS • A Levels are a relentless examination of your child’s resilience and abilities - academically, mentally and emotionally • They are tough, and do not stop for illness, relationship break-ups, bereavement etc. • There is a huge jump from GCSE to A levels • Your child needs your full support! YEAR 12 STUDENTS SAY… • “I seriously underestimated the work.” • “I had to limit my social life.” • “I wish I’d worked harder from the start.” • “My free periods weren’t free!” • “I reinvented myself as a learner.” • “I smashed my predicted grades.” • “Because I chose the right subjects it was much easier to study.” • “I know which uni course I want to do now.” SOME BASIC RULES • School starts at 8.30 sharp every day • Students will be put in tutor groups • The Stage System lets students (and parents) know when something is wrong • Students must be properly equipped • Latecomers will NOT be admitted to lessons • Use non-contact hours wisely THE UMBRELLA OF SUCCESS! Bad choice of subjects Unemployment The wrong career choice Volunteering Qualifications Hobbies Team pursuits – music, sport, drama Experience of work – mentoring, careers fairs, workplace visits, shadowing, work experience WHAT ELSE HAPPENS IN YEAR 12? • Mentors (about 60 students are getting this now) • Ambition to Reality (to improve presentation and interview skills) • Employability (we have set up >100 work experiences this year) • Community Action (also helps students with their Uni applications and CVs) • External partners (PwC, King’s College Hospital, IPC, SJ Berwin, National Theatre, orchestras and art galleries) WHAT SHOULD YOU DO NOW? • Talk to your child about the subjects they want to take – how does this impact on future career/university choices? • Research university courses (Which? guide) • Students can reinvent themselves as a learner and as part of the school and wider community KEY DATES Current Charter students • Subject Taster Days 15 & 16 July 8:50–1pm • GCSE Results Day - 22 August 10–1pm New to Charter College students • Submission of results by non-Charter pupils – 22 August 1:30– 3:30pm or 23 August 9:00–1pm All • Enrolment Day - 28 August, 9:30–1:00pm • Admin Day – 30 August in time slots by surname (times given out on Enrolment Day) • Term starts - Tuesday 3 September 8:30am More questions?
