Subordinating Conjunctions
Review
Subordinate Conjunctions…
Make a sentence less important
(incomplete)
Make a sentence dependent on another
sentence in order to make sense
Common subordinate
conjunctions are…
When
Whenever
While
As
Since
Because
If
So that
Although
Even though
As soon as
If you add a subordinate
conjunction to a subject and
predicate, look what happens:
John threw the ball immediately
Because John threw the ball immediately,
After a subordinate conjunction is
added, a complete sentence must
also be added to make sense
Because John threw the ball immediately,
the player was out.
his first baseman had to be alert.
he was able to give his team a chance at
winning the game.
A subordinate clause:
Starts with a subordinate conjunction
Is followed by a subject and predicate
Depends on another subject and predicate
(complete sentence) to make sense
Example:
[If you like ice cream], you should try the
Marble Slab Creamery.
Subordinate clause poems…
Start with 4 subordinate clauses
Each clause is followed by a comma
End with a complete sentence (subject and
predicate)
A poem might look like this:
When I traveled to the airport,
After the transport truck jack-knifed,
Because the 401 was jam-packed,
Since I was stuck in traffic,
I almost missed my flight.
Or this:
If Bob wants to pass this course,
Because he doesn’t want to go to summer
school,
Since he has a summer part-time job,
When the teacher assigns projects,
He will hand everything in.
Your turn!
Write two subordinate clause poems and
hand them in for marking.
