Direct control over vast territories. Imperialism was based on 4 things... 1. Economics Western countries wanted new markets and raw materials such as rubber, tin, and oil. 2. Competition Gaining an advantage over your rivals Colonies were a source of power. Failure to have colonies was a sign of weakness. 3. Social Darwinism Superior races must dominate the weaker and inferior races. Only the strong shall survive. 4. Religion and Humanitarianism White people had a moral obligation to civilize ignorant people. This concept is referred to as “White Man’s Burden”. 3 Kinds of Imperialism Protectorate - a political unit (colony) that depends on someone else for protection. a. Puerto Rico 2. Direct Rule - form of rule where local officials were removed from power and replaced with a new set of officials from the mother country. a. Iraq, Afghanistan 1. 3. Indirect Rule - form of rule where local officials were allowed to keep their positions of authority and status but in a new colonial setting. a.
