3-Person Officiating Not just an extra official. Measurable Outcomes • The official will – Recognize positioning during pre-game, timeouts, and free throws. – Identify primary coverage areas for lead, trail, and center official. – Name conditions necessary for rotations and switches. – Identify special NFHS requirements. PREGAME PRE-GAME WITH TEAM CAPTAINS (CAPTAINS SHOULD FACE THEIR BASKET TO BEGIN GAME) O.K. USE YOUR IMAGINATION ABOUT TEAM JERSEYS! R U-2 VISITORS U- 1 T ABLE HOME JUMP BALL T L R C U2 C U1 L R T U2 Primary Coverage Areas (PCA) • Protect your primary area. • Get every call correct in your area. • Leave your ego at the door - and GET THE OBVIOUS! – Help in secondary areas only when necessary. TRUST YOUR PARTNER. Double Whistle • Yield to primary. – LANE – Lead probably needs to step up. Drive to the Basket • When a player with the ball starts a drive to the basket from an official’s PCA, that official has primary coverage of the player and the ball all the way to the basket – even if the ball moves into another official’s PCA. 3- PERSON CREW PRIMARY COVERAGE AREAS T L C C L T C L T L T C L T C Three Point Coverage BALL IN OFFICIAL’S PCA ALWAYS SIGNALS 3-POINT ATTEMPT OTHER OFFICIAL WILL ONLY MIRROR THE SUCCESSFUL 3-POINT SCORE BALL IN OFFICIAL’S PCA ALWAYS SIGNALS 3-POINT ATTEMPT OTHER OFFICIAL WILL ONLY MIRROR THE SUCCESSFUL 3-POINT SCORE THROW-INS THROW-IN POSITION OF BALL ALWAYS HAND BALL TO THROWER IN FRONT COURT THROW-IN POSITION OF BALL ALWAYS HAND BALL TO THROWER IN FRONT COURT TRAIL WILL ADMINISTER ALL SIDE-LINE THROW-INS (BOUNCE THE BALL) L T FRONTCOURT C T ABLE T TRAIL WILL ADMINISTER END-LINE THROW-INS FROM THE BACKCOURT (BOUNCE BALL UNLESS THERE IS A HARD PRESS) (DO NOT BOUNCE ACROSS OTHER SIDE OF COURT) L BACKCOURT C T ABLE Rotations • Ball location dictates rotations. • Lead starts rotation based on ball location. KEY: – “Give me a reason NOT to go.” • Center works high with ball on C side. – Better vision of lead ~ smoother rotation. • C can force a rotation with high front court trap coverage. Lead must recognize. TRANSITION & PRESS COVERAGE WARNING - This is an unapproved, yet realistic, drawing. SUBSTITUTIONS • Off official closest to table will beckon Subs. • Off official opposite table could be the closest official to the table. EXAMPLE Throw-In official is trail at division line, table-side Lead official is on the end line, table-side Center official is opposite table and should step towards table and beckon substitutes (not Lead) SWITCHES Switches • Calling official goes table side to report fouls. • Table side official fills in for calling official, except going opposite direction. • No Long switch. NFHS • Non-calling officials – WATCH THE PLAYERS. GET IT RIGHT Special NFHS Conditions • We do not make the “long switch” when a foul occurs. • Calling official always goes table side in the front court. • C or “Opposite” Table has last shot. • High school mechanics only… – Signal at the spot – Foul reporting box. • Black shoes. NonSignals Summary • • • • • • Know and work your primary. Help in secondary only when needed. Get the obvious - regardless of PCA. Table side on fouls. Last shot –pregame and remind. PCA is smaller – better performance is expected. • Relax and officiate. QUESTIONS ?
