With special thanks to Dan Sheperdson - VT
PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION
• Review the “basics” of Crew of 2
• Provide suggestions not in the book
• Get everyone to ‘think’ Mechanics heading into the
season
IAABO BASIC FOUNDATION
 One Rule-One Interpretation
• Based on the NFHS Rule & Case books
 One Mechanic-One Signal
• Based on the IAABO Officials Manual & NFHS
 Mechanics versus Signals
• Mechanics are “methods and procedures” designed to put
you in the right place
• Signals provide information

ESSENTIALS OF GOOD MECHANICS
 Know the “officials’ manual”
 It’s a guide BUT it’s a good one
 Q - How many pages in the Mechanics manual – 38, 98, 238?
 Question:
• “If you could edit, add, or alter one Mechanic, what would it be and
why?”
We will get back to this at the end of the discussion……………

WHAT IS THE BEST STARTING POSITION FOR THE
TRAIL IN THE FRONTCOURT?
A. Way out near the mid court line in that little 8’ x 8’ area we call
‘No Man’s Land’.
B. Sitting next to Frank and Sheila – because they always have
the best view!
C. Just off the sideline somewhere in the vicinity of the 28 foot
line.

NOTICE PCA ON LAST SLIDE
• Above FT extended…
• Whose PCA is it?
• Who “blows that line?”
• Who in-bounds the balI?
•WORKING THE ARC
 What? When? Why?
• What?: “Mirror” the arc (3-pt line)
• When?: Ball crosses the basket line
• Why?: See thru play…3-pt attempt…credibility
10
CLOSE DOWN
• As Trail:
• Move toward “end line”
• On shot
• Help partner with rebounding
• As Lead:
• Move toward “lane line”
• As ball approaches “basket line”
• Prepared to go “ball side”
11

ACTIVE PLAY BETWEEN THE FOUL LINES
The best way to officiate ‘between the foul lanes’ is……..
 Just assume you partner has it and profile for the crowd.
 As Lead, get to end line as fast as possible; as Trail just stay
out of the way so you don’t get run over.
 Split the play above the backcourt foul lane by the
basketline. Lead and Trail box the action and both actively
officiate.

WHAT ARE THE “3 BE’S?”
• IF calling OUT of your PCA
• Be Late…give partner 1st shot
• Be RIGHT…100%
• Be Needed…will it help the game?
17
THROW-IN LOCATION IN FRONTCOURT
• DOES matter
• “Off” official may have best look; get it right
• Know the following chart
18
Pg 41
19
FOUL REPORTING AREA
• Get there to report ALL fouls
• Where is it?
1. Table side of basket line
2. Between “top of keys”
3. Away from table…
20
21
“SWITCHING” ON FOULS
• What is it and why do we do it?
• Change places with partner in order to see the “other"
team…fairness
• Same official won’t call 3 “post defender” fouls on White 22.
• When switching, you will ALWAYS cross paths with your
partner…
22
FREE THROW COVERAGE
 Proper position:
• Trail
• 1-2 steps above free throw line
• ½ between near sideline and lane line
• Close down on shot
• Lead:
• Approximately 4’ from near lane line
• Off court, near end line
23
FREE THROW COVERAGE
 PCA:
• Trail: (12)… 1 Free thrower, 2 players on opposite
lane line and flight of the ball
• Lead: (13)…1 player on low block on your line, all 3
players on opposite lane line
• NEW (or old) RULE (how long have you’ve reffed?)
• Players on lane: IN on RELEASE
• Shooter and others: IN on TOUCH (no change)
24
THINK MECHANICS
• “If you could edit, add, or alter one Mechanic, what would it
be and why?”
SUMMARY
• Know the alphabet!…
 PCA (and the “BE’s” if outside your PCA)
 A-B-C as Lead
 Be where you have to Be, to See what you have to See.
• Do you attend Church services of some kind?'
