Measurement: Area of
Complex Figures
By Mr. Bales
Objective
By the end of the lesson, you will be able
to find the area of complex figures.
Standard 4MG1.4 - Students will
understand and use formulas to solve
problems involving…areas of rectangles and
squares. Use those formulas to find the
areas of more complex figures by dividing
the figures into basic shapes.
Teach
With me, draw the letter
L in block style on your
graph paper. We will be dividing the letter into 2 small
rectangles.
What is the formula we can use to find the area of
each rectangle?
A = l x w
Find the area of each rectangle using the formula.
Check answer by counting the squares.
Explain how we would find the area of the letter L.

Luke is staying at a hotel that has a swimming pool
shown. Luke wants to know the area of the pool.
How can he find the area?
Complex Figure
A complex figure is made up of two or
more shapes. To find the area of a
complex figure, break the figure into
smaller parts.

Let’s watch the Concept in Motion!!
Find the area of the swimming pool at Luke’s hotel.
Step 1 - Break the figure into smaller parts. Look
for the rectangles and squares.

Area of a Complex Figure
• Step 2 - Find the area of each part.
Rectangle
A = length x width
A = l x w
A = 12 m x 6 m
A = 72 square meters

Square
A = side x side
A = s x s
A = 10 m x 10 m
A = 100 square meters

Step 3 - Add the areas.
• The area is 72 + 100 or 172 square meters.
Let’s Hear From Mr.
Hardesty!!
"Here you are Mr. Bales!"
uttered the computer.
"Why, thank-you
computer, " exclaimed Mr.
