v 1. 2. 3. In this triathlon you do a 2k swim, a 43k bike and a 10k run. How far overall do they travel? In a 4x400m relay, each person runs it in 42.9 seconds. How long does it take the whole team to finish? Paula Radcliffe has the women’s record for the marathon. She completed it in 2h, 15min and 25 sec. The men’s record is 2h, 3min and 38 sec. What is the difference between these two times? LO: To be able calculate areas of rectangles and rectilinear shapes. (Level 4/5) Good if you can calculate areas by counting squares. Even better if you can work out rectangles area using the formula. Excellent if you can work out the areas of rectilinear shapes. Olympic Area Counting Squares A square cm has a length of 1 cm. We say that it has an area of 1 cm2 ( 1 cm squared). This rectangle contains six squares. Each of the squares has an area of 1cm2, so the area of the rectangle is 6cm2. Questions Count the squares, to find the area of the Olympic boxing ring. Answers Did you get them right? 48 square cm Perimeter To work out the perimeter of a shape you add all of the sides together. 6m 6m 12m 12m Question 2 Can you work out the perimeter with just two sides? 12m 24m Answers Did you get them right? Length x Width To work out the area of a rectangle or a square you have to times the length by the width. Example An Olympic sandpit is 2.75m x 9m. What is the area of the sandpit? What is the area of the sandpit? Answer Now try some questions yourself • ANSWERS Compound Area There are two methods to work out the area of a shape. Method 1 • Divide the shape into separate squares and rectangles. • Work out the area of each separate one and then add them together. Example Compound Area Method 2 • Imagine the area as a huge rectangle with a shape cut out. • Find the area of the large rectangle and subtract it by the area of the part which is cut out. Example Question 2 What is the area of the podium? 1m 1m 1m 1m 0.5m Heights Gold= 1.5m Silver=1m Bronze=0.5m Answers The answer to the question was-: 3m2.
