Keeping your
Computer
Running At
TOP Speed
Delete old
programs
Make more room on
your hard drive
Go to START
SETTINGS
CONTROL PANEL
Select ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
Scan the list and select a
program you do not use
any more or have never
used
Hit the ADD/REMOVE
button and follow the
directions
Restart if necessary
Come back to this point
and continue removing
programs as needed
Delete
useless
files
Start by double
clicking on My
Computer. At SHS
this is the picture of
the computer with the
room number and
computer number
below it.
Now double
click on the
C Drive
Scan over
and double
click on
Windows
Find the Temporary Internet Files
folder and open it
Now select Edit and then Select All
Hit the DELETE key and say OK
Let’s go back and clear out a couple more folders
Select the UP button
OR select GO and UP ONE LEVEL
Clear out the
TEMP folder
And the
COOKIES
folder the
same way
Close all windows when you are done
Right Click on the
Recycle Bin
and select
Empty Recycle Bin
Answer YES and
you’re done
SCANDISK
Microsoft program designed to
check for software problems
on your hard drive
Run
Start
Type in SCANDISK
Click OK
Select
Automatically
fix errors
And START
Watch the bar since there is nothing on TV
Read the report since you don’t have a good book
Select CLOSE and select CLOSE again……You’re done!
DEFRAG
Microsoft program designed
to eliminate empty space on
hard drive and move parts of
a program together
Run
Start
Type in DEFRAG
Click OK
Click OK if this is the Drive
you want to DEFRAG
Click on Show Details
and BE PATIENT!!!

Select YES when it is finished
and you’re done!
Turn off
unnecessary
programs
Select:
START
PROGRAMS
STARTUP
Be sure StartUp is
empty. Use Right
click and DELETE
for any programs
showing
Run
Start
Type in MSCONFIG
(Windows 98 ONLY)
Click OK
Select the
STARTUP tab
Uncheck
programs you
do not want to
start.
If something
unexpected
happens, you can
always come
back here and
turn the programs
back on.
Now
Select the
Win.ini tab
Uncheck
load=
and
run=
IF there is
anything after
the equal sign
Select OK and
RESTART
Tweak your
system
Once again hit START
then RUN
Type in SYSEDIT
and hit OK
Put your cursor at the beginning of the second line
Type in - DEL C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP
Hit ENTER
Use the X to close out the window and say YES to save changes
Right click on
MY COMPUTER
And select
PROPERTIES
Select the
PERFORMANCE tab
and select
FILE SYSYEM
Select the
HARD DISK tab
Use the drop down menu to select
NETWORK SERVER
Select OK and you’re done…restart if necessary!
