English Close Reading Skills
Types of Questions
INFORMATION/OWN WORDS
Information/Own Words Questions ask you to examine the CONTENT
of a passage –ie WHAT the writer writes. You have to focus on the
INFORMATION AND IDEAS presented by the writer.
Tip: Always focus on Topic Sentences at the start of each p[aragraph
since they will signal what the content/ideas of the paragrpah will
concern itself with.
INFO/OWN WORDS
This category of Question asks you to retrieve factual information
from the passage and EXPRESS IT IN YOUR OWN WORDS. YOU MUST
NOT COPY/LIFT DIRECTLY FROM THE PASSAGE. YOU ARE BEING
TESTED ON YOUR OWN LANGUAGE SKILLS TO COME UP WITH AN
ACCEPTABLE ALTERNATIVE. THE QUALITY OF YOUR OWN
LANGUAGE SKILLS IS VITAL HERE.. READ! READ! READ!
INFO /OWN WORDS QUESTIONS
RECOGNITION:
What reasons/facts/ issues does the writer give..? Use your
own words as far as possible
Give two facts /points /issues.. Use your own words.
Name three factors/issues...
Explain in your own words how…
These are general examples. There will be specific ones based
on the content of your passage..
SUGGESTED APPROACH
Mark off the section of text given in line reference
Read section of text closely. Look out for any key words
present here which were evident in the question. These are
your indicators that you are in the correct section of text.
As you find each answer within the text highlight it and
number it.
Remember the number of answers you are looking for will
depend on the marks avail eg 2 points for two marks
Now bullet point each response CONVERTING IT INTO
YOUR OWN WORDS SO THAT YOUR ANSWER
RETAINS THE SAME MEANING AS THE INITIAL TEXT
