Gown Meets Town: Zoning
Variance Required
U planner was former city planner, knew
where bodies buried
Local fire marshal, formerly with UF,
obstructed
County limited to 9 pm, 2 yrs. temporary
approval, 100 cars
What We Wish We Had Known
Consider temporary space option upfront, add
10% to projected costs
Lock in unit prices—2 hurricanes, building boom
inflationary, delaying
Who will handle maintenance, security, utilities
installation and maintenance, cleaning, trash
removal? Argue that U should pay all costs saved
by move
Divide total project into smaller components to
allow faster acceptance, move back
What worked
Coordination with vendors—landscaping, chilled
water digging, book and furniture moving
simultaneous
Communication with faculty, staff, students
Let them eat cake—cookouts, parties, etc. to thank
community for putting up with noise, dust, etc.
Library in exile campaign
Renovated stack area as study hall with borrowed
furniture
