How You Can
Help Your Child:
Establish calm, consistent homework
routines. Assist as necessary with homework.
Communicate with your child’s teachers.
Please check your child’s planner daily. It’s a
great communication tool.
Talk with your child about his/her school
work, friends, academic goals, and life.

English Language Arts
Writing
Your child will begin to write
exciting, fancy sentences. You will
notice them understanding and
using paragraphs.
They will use conventions of
writing such as spelling,
punctuation, and capitals.
We will consume, critique, and
produce personal narratives
(stories from life, imaginative
stories), essays and opinion
writing (persuasive writing) and
informative writing (reports and
power points)

English Language Arts
Word Study
• Students will be given
words in school on Monday
to cut, sort and conduct
activities with throughout
the week (sorts, sentences,
rainbow words, etc)
• Students will also receive a
list to go home on Monday
to study during the week.
• Students will take a word
study test on Friday.

You may access the program by going to the district
website www.kenton.k12.ny.us find Edison
Elementary under Schools and click on
ThinkCentral. Students can use their user name and
number.
You may access FASTTMATH by going to the same
website and finding the FASTTMATH link.

Science
Our Science series is Scott
Foresman
The Science Curriculum includes 4
units of study that spiral from year to
year:
Life Science
Earth Science
Physical Science
Space and Technology.
We will start with a unit of study in
Matter. Others include Plants,
Ecosystems, Space, Water and
Weather.

Social Studies
We will be studying
world communities to
include history,
economics, geography,
and government.
We will also integrate
Social Studies with
reading.

Technology
Each classroom has 6 lap tops. These will be
used to incorporate all subject areas.
Classes also have a designated time in the
lab each week.

Homework
Children copy homework assignments in
their planner daily. PARENTS: Please review
the planner nightly.
Children are to read at home for 20 minutes
every night. They should record the book
read in the reading log.
Math will be given regularly.
Math facts should be practiced daily.
There will be consequence in school for
missed homework.

Birthdays
• We want to celebrate your child’s birthday! We
will sing to him/her. Your child will be able to
choose a book and a pencil from the office.
• Pencils, erasers, and/or stickers can be handed
out if you wish.
• The cafeteria offers two different birthday
celebration choices if you choose to participate
(Slushies or Pizza).
