Environment
The word environment means what is around us. Some
people live in town environment, some in countryside. But
the soil we walk on, the water we drink, air we breathe in are
all parts of the environment.
Nowadays people understand how important it is to
solve the environmental problems that endanger
people’s lives. The most serious problems are:
• Pollution in many forms (air, water, nuclear)
• Noise from cars, buses, planes, etc.
• Destruction of wildlife and beauty of the
countryside.
• Shortage of natural resources (metals, different
kinds of fuel)
• The growth of population.
“Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink,”
said the sailor from Coleridge’s poem describing to a
friend how awful it was to be without drinking water
in middle of ocean. It is strange to think that the
water around the ship was probably safe to drink, it
was salty, but not polluted. Sea water today is much
more dangerous.
There is no ocean that is not used as a dump. The
Pacific Ocean, especially, has suffered from nuclear
pollution because French Government tests nuclear
weapons there.
Many rivers and lakes are poisoned too. Fish and
reptiles can’t live in them. There is not enough oxygen
in the water. In such places birds leave their habitats
and many plants die. If people drink that water or eat
fish they can die too. It is all because factories and
plants pour waste in rivers. So they poison water.
Factories use clean water. After water is used it
becomes poison .And this water goes back in rivers
and seas.
Nuclear power stations can go wrong and cause
nuclear pollution. This happened in Britain, Mile
Island in the USA, and Chernobyl.
To make air clear again we need good filters at nuclear
power stations, at factories and plants also cars and
buses.
Both clear water and air are
necessary for health. If people want
to survive they must solve these
problems quickly. Man begins to
understand that environment is not
just a town or countryside, but the
whole earth.
