Book Clubs:

• Students meet in small groups and read a text that is the same genre as our current read aloud text. They will also mimic the CIA model as they read, think, and write responses.

Guided Reading:

• Working in a small group on a specific skill • At student’s reading level

Close Reading:

• A short piece of text and read and reread multiple times, each time for a different purpose, and thus deepening understanding. (Read to: Understand the text, the author, and “yourself.”

Writing:

• Writer’s Workshop: Students continue to build on the 6 traits, write reports using research, and also write in response to text (both CIA & CCSS)

Science

Variables Environments

(plants & animals are explored to understand what an environment is & how organisms function and survive)

Energy & Matter

(properties of light & states of matter) • Scientific Process • Mini Units: Food & Nutrition, Heredity & Adaptation, and Space • • Science Fair (Spring) Conducting controlled experiments & completing a science write-up.

*Students should review science vocabulary several times a week. Tests are challenging & require studying! Look for “How to Study” coming home later this week!

Fountas & Pinnell (reading accuracy, fluency, & comprehension) ● Unit Assessments in science, social studies, and math.

● District Math Benchmarks (Scantron) ● Writing Assessment (CCSS) ● Social Studies CBA (research historical issue, the stakeholders and their position, and then develop personal opinion) ● MSP (Measurement of Student Progress) – Math, Reading, Science. Transition year to CCSS.

This will be done sparingly. • Studying science vocab. and for upcoming tests.

Report Cards

Report Cards: January and June. Students will be graded on a numeral rubric from 1-4.

4: Consistently excellent at grade level

3: Working consistently at grade level

2: Progressing to grade level

1: Below grade level with little or no progress

Conferences are scheduled for: October 28-November 1 March 24-28
