Hebrew Communications - Examples
This module introduces several sample scenarios in order to illustrate
verbal Hebrew communications between individuals.
Each example will start with the Hebrew text, which will be followed by
its transliteration, its translation, and listings of new vocabulary
contained in it. In most cases, previously defined vocabulary will not
be included in each example, except when it is part of an idiom or
expression that is being introduced for the first time.
Individual examples may also contain relevant explanatory notes to
help clarify context and notational items.

DAN: Hello Sir! We shall sit outside.
The Owner: OK. We have a table for two available outside. Come!
Ruth and Dan sit down and order
Waitress: Hello! My name is Rinah. Are you ready to order?
DAN: Hello! Yes. We are ready. Ruthie, what would you like?
Ruth: I wish to have a glass of water, a “white” coffee, and a piece of the marble
cake.
Rinah: OK. And what may I bring for you, Sir?
DAN: I shall take a Turkish coffee, a portion of the cheese cake, and also a
glass of water, please.

Hebrew Communications – Example 2 (Part 3)
English Translation
Ruth meets Dan, an old friend, at the Carmel Market
Ruth and Dan are chatting
Ruth: So tell me Danny, how are things (lit. what is being heard)?
Dan: In short, Ruthie, life is (lit. they [are]) good. Sarah still teaches at Tel-Aviv
University, and I still lecture at Bar-Ilan University. The children, David and
Rachel, are serving in the armed forces.
Now, tell me about what is happening by you.
Ruth: As you know, we live now in New York. Moshe is working as a manager in
a private firm that deals in the capital market, and I am managing a travel
agency. I came to visit my parents who live in a senior home in Jerusalem. The
twins, Rafi and Tami, are studying at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (lit.
the School of Medicine named after Albert Einstein), and they are going (lit.
standing) to finish next year (lit. in the next/coming year).
Dan: And how much longer (lit. more time) will you be in Tel-Aviv?
Ruth: Two more days, and then I return to the United States.

English Translation
Ruth meets Dan, an old friend, at the Carmel Market
Jacob and Ya’el, neighbors of Dan and Sarah, pass by the café
Jacob: Hello Danny! What’s happening?
Dan: Hello [to you (plural)]! Please meet (lit. to meet) Ruthie, an old friend who
is visiting here from America.
Jacob & Ya’el (together): Pleased to meet you! Where in America do you live?
Ruth: Pleased to meet you! My family and I live in New York.
Ya’el: That’s nice. Jacob and I visited relatives in the city two years ago.
Dan: Ruthie and I studied together in high school, and we met here over a cup
of coffee. Perhaps you will join us (lit. to us)?
Jacob: Thank you! However, we will not be able to join since we are on the way
to an important meeting.

Ruth meets Dan, an old friend, at the Carmel Market
Making plans for a meal at a restaurant
Dan: Ruthie, do you have plans for the evening? If not, would you, perhaps, go out with
Sarah and me for supper?
Ruth: No. Tonight (lit. this evening) I have no plans. I shall be happy to go out with you.
Dan: Wonderful! Give me a moment to call up Sarah and notify her.
Dan: Hello! Sarah? I invited Ruthie to go out with us tonight for supper.
Sarah: Very nice, Danny! Where shall we eat, and at what time?
Dan: I shall make reservations at the Maganda restaurant for seven o’clock.
Sarah: OK. See you later.
Dan: Ruthie, are you acquainted with the Maganda restaurant in Kerem haTeimanim?
Ruth: Certainly! An excellent restaurant. I have not eaten there for many years.
Dan: That’s good. Sarah and I shall come to the hotel to pick you up at half-past-six.

Hebrew Communications – Example 2 (Part 7)
English Translation
Ruth meets Dan, an old friend, at the Carmel Market
Parting till evening
Dan: Ruthie, I must (lit. am obliged) to return to the office. I have a class to teach at three.
Ruth: That’s OK. I want to look for a few more presents to bring home.
Dan: That’s good. You have a large selection here at the Carmel Market.
Ruth: I know. But the problem is that not much time is left for shopping.
Dan: So, as we agreed, Sarah and I shall pick you up at six-thirty.
Ruth: Correct. I shall wait for you outside near the main entrance to the hotel.
Dan: All right. See you again tonight.
Ruth: Thanks for the treat, and see you again. Convey to Sarah regards from me.
This is the end of the story!
