Discovery, Invention and
Innovation
Invention and Innovations
Tech 265
Unit one
Invention!
• Invention can be thought of as a new
manmade device or process.
• An example of invention is the internal
combustion engine invented in the 1800’s.
The internal combustion
engine is used in cars, trains,
trucks, lawnmowers, boats
and many other applications.
Innovation
Smithsonian
*An innovation can
be define as simply
a better way of
doing things or an
improvement to an
existing product or
invention.
Discovery
• Discovery is the primary process used in
science to uncover new knowledge.
• Thomas Edison invented over 1000
patents, but only made one scientific
discovery. This discovery was called the
“Edison Effect”.
Science
• Science is the pursuit
of new knowledge
about nature.
• Its main goal is
knowledge, not
solutions to problems.
Creativity!?! Play !!!
• The ability to see a
problem in several
dimensions.
• Or the ability to see
the problem at hand
and a solution to the
problem.

Inventor Spotlight: Mike Augspurger
• “If you want to make an improvement or
an innovation or an invention the place to
look is in yourself.” –Mike Augspurger
• Mike is an expert cyclist, a machinist and
a designer and builder of bicycles.
• Early interest in go-karts and
woodworking and machining.
• Invented a sport hand cycle.
• No formal training in mechanics.
Engineering
• The profession in which knowledge of the
Mathematical and natural sciences gained
by study.
• Engineering in the simplest sense is the
deliberate, orderly process through which
technology is created.
Technology
• Technology can be
thought of as the
innovation or change
of the natural world to
meet human needs.
• Something built or
created to satisfy
human wants and
needs.
Design, Design, Design
• DESIGN – the process of designing
solutions to technological problems –
innovating and inventing.
LEGO
Rhino
Patents
• Patents provide inventers exclusive rights
to manufacture a device that is fixed
(currently 17 years).
• Concept of the patent is that a inventor will
share the details of how the device works
other inventors can innovate on the
concepts established by the original
inventor.
• Paper clip and the notches on the clip.

TradeMarks ™
• Trademarks are a type of Intellectual
property.
• Trademark is a graphic symbol that is
identified with the company or individual.
• For example a Coco-cola logo was
registered over a century ago and still is
the property of the company. If the
company goes out of business it still has
value to the company
Copyright ©
• Copyright is related to the written material,
graphic material, or music.
• Copyright provide the creator the exclusive
rights to their works for a definite period of
time.
• Copyright are extended to 50 years after
the death of the artist.
Standards and Benchmarks
•Standard 1: Students will develop an understanding of the characteristics and scope of
technology.
o [1.F] New products and systems can be developed to solve problems or to help do
things that could not be done without the help of technology.
*Standard 3: Students will develop an understanding of the relationships among
technologies and the other connections between technology and the other fields of
study.
o[3.F] Knowledge gained from other fields of study has a direct effect on the
development of technological products and systems.
•Standard 6:Students will develop an understanding of the role of society in the
development and use of technology.
o [6.D] Throughout history, new technologies have resulted from the demands, values,
and interests of individuals, businesses, industries, and societies.
o [6.E] The use of inventions and innovations has led to changes in society and the
creation of new needs and wants.
•Standard 10:Students will develop an understanding of the role of troubleshooting,
research and development, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem
solving.
o [10.G] Invention is a process of turning ideas and imagination into devices and
systems. Innovation is the process of modifying an existing product or system to
improve it.
